How to Evaluate a Backpacking Route From a Map Before You Commit

A practical map-based process for screening a backpacking route before committing, including distance, elevation, water, campsites, crossings, navigation, and access.

A route can look manageable on a screen and feel very different once you're carrying a loaded pack through it. Before committing to a backpacking trip, I want to know more than the trail's total distance. I want to understand how that distance is distributed, where the difficult terrain appears, whether water is dependable, and what happens if the day takes longer than planned.

A map won't answer every question, but it can reveal many problems early. Here's a practical way to evaluate a route before you start reading trip reports or making firm plans.

Start with the route's basic shape

Begin with the entire route, not just the highlighted trail line. Look at the trailhead, intended camps, high points, low points, water sources, crossings, and exit options. At this stage, you're trying to understand the route as a sequence of decisions rather than a single distance.

Ask yourself:

  • Where does the route start and finish?
  • Is it an out-and-back, a loop, or a one-way trip?
  • How far is the nearest road or alternate exit from each section?
  • Are there long stretches where a small mistake could create a major detour?
  • Which parts of the route would be difficult if I arrived late in the day?

A loop may look efficient on a map, but it can include a complicated shuttle or a remote section with no simple escape. An out-and-back gives you a known route home, but the return may be tiring after several days on the trail. The route format matters because it changes how much flexibility you have.

Calculate distance in daily sections

The total mileage is only a starting point. Divide the route into realistic day sections based on camps, water, terrain, and daylight rather than splitting it into equal distances.

For example, a 16-kilometre day could be reasonable on a smooth, gently graded trail. The same distance may be ambitious if it includes steep climbs, rough footing, repeated creek crossings, or route-finding through open terrain.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Distance between reliable campsites
  • Distance between dependable water sources
  • Long climbs early or late in the day
  • Sections where turning around would be difficult
  • The distance to an emergency exit or road

If the map's distance measurement follows a simplified line, it may understate the actual walking distance. Curves, switchbacks, small route deviations, and detours around obstacles all add up. Treat a digital distance as an estimate, not a promise.

For a first trip on unfamiliar terrain, I prefer an itinerary with room to slow down. A shorter planned day also gives you options if navigation takes longer, weather changes, or someone in the group isn't moving well.

Read the contour lines as a story

Contour lines show how the ground changes, but their value comes from reading them in context. Closely spaced lines indicate a steeper slope; widely spaced lines usually indicate gentler terrain. The number of contour lines between two points shows how much climbing is involved, while their spacing shows how concentrated that climbing may be.

Don't look only at total elevation gain. A route with 700 metres of ascent spread over many kilometres may feel very different from one that climbs the same amount in a short, steep section.

Look for:

  • Long, steady climbs
  • Short, sharp pitches
  • Descents that may be harder on tired knees than expected
  • Ridges exposed to wind and weather
  • Valleys that collect water or become difficult to cross
  • Side slopes where a narrow trail may be more demanding than the elevation suggests

Summits and passes often create natural decision points. If the map shows a steep approach to a pass followed by a descent to camp, ask whether you can realistically complete that section in the conditions you expect. A route that is straightforward in dry weather may require more time when the trail is wet, snowy, icy, or covered by fallen trees.

Watch for misleadingly gentle terrain

A broad area without many contour lines isn't automatically easy. It may be a marsh, a boulder field, dense forest, or an open area with no obvious path. On a paper map, flat terrain can look inviting. In practice, poor footing and difficult navigation may make it slow.

Satellite imagery, shaded relief, and land-cover information can help, but each has limitations. Use them to form questions rather than to assume the ground will look exactly as shown.

Mark every likely water source

Water is one of the most important route-screening questions. Mark lakes, rivers, streams, springs, and mapped seasonal water sources, then examine the spacing between them.

A blue line on a map doesn't guarantee drinkable or flowing water. Streams can be dry, frozen, contaminated, difficult to reach, or unsafe to cross. Lakes may be hidden below a steep slope. A spring symbol can be useful, but it still needs to be treated as a possibility until confirmed by current local information.

Build your plan around the most dependable-looking sources, and carry enough capacity to handle the gaps between them. If the route crosses a dry plateau or a long ridge, the map may show where you can refill before the climb—but not whether that source will still be available when you arrive.

Water also affects camping. A campsite beside a stream may be convenient, but it can be exposed to flooding, insects, cold air, or busy wildlife movement. If you plan to camp near water, check the area's camping rules and choose a durable, low-impact site away from the immediate shoreline where appropriate.

Identify campsites—and question them

Look for marked campsites, established backcountry campgrounds, shelters, and areas that appear suitable for camping. Then ask what kind of site each one is.

A map symbol may indicate a designated site, but it usually won't tell you:

  • How many tents the site can accommodate
  • Whether reservations or permits are required
  • Whether it has a flat tent pad
  • How exposed it is to wind
  • Whether it is near water or a privy
  • Whether it floods or becomes muddy
  • Whether camping is permitted throughout the surrounding area

For a route with fixed camps, calculate the distance from one realistic site to the next. If there are only a few legal or established sites, you have less flexibility when weather or fatigue changes your schedule.

A strong plan includes at least one alternative for each night, or at minimum a clear understanding of what you will do if the intended camp is full or unsuitable.

Confirm your overnight options: Before you commit to the itinerary, check current park or land-manager rules for permits, reservations, designated camps, group limits, and seasonal closures. Treat mapped campsites as planning clues until those details are confirmed.

Study crossings and other choke points

On a map, a river crossing can be a small symbol. On the ground, it may be the feature that determines whether the route is passable.

Mark every river, creek, gorge, bridge, ford, and steep traverse. Note whether the route crosses the water once or repeatedly. A bridge may be seasonal or damaged, while a ford may change significantly with rain, snowmelt, or upstream releases.

Other choke points include:

  • Narrow canyon sections
  • Cliff bands and exposed traverses
  • Avalanche-prone slopes
  • Tidal shorelines
  • Boulder fields
  • Snow-covered passes
  • Trails that disappear in wetlands or scree

If one feature can stop the entire trip, build a decision point around it. For example, you might plan to evaluate a crossing early in the day, when water levels and visibility are better, rather than arriving late after a long approach.

Safety advice for crossings and exposed terrain depends heavily on local conditions, season, and the group's skills. A map can identify the hazard, but it can't establish that a crossing is safe on your travel day.

Check access, parking, and transportation

The route starts at the trailhead, but the map should show how you get there. Examine the final approach road, parking areas, gates, shuttle connections, and possible turnarounds.

A road shown on a map may be rough, private, seasonally closed, or unsuitable for a low-clearance vehicle. A trailhead may have limited parking or require a reservation. For a one-way route, determine exactly how you'll reach the starting point and return from the finish.

Also consider whether the route crosses private land, a border, a permit area, or a section managed by a different authority. Land ownership and access arrangements can be more complicated than the trail line suggests.

Confirm the trailhead plan: Check current road conditions, gate status, parking requirements, shuttle arrangements, permits, and access restrictions before leaving home. Save the relevant contact details and a backup plan in case the advertised access changes.

Use map layers to find the gaps

No single map contains everything you need. Compare a topographic map with a current trail map, satellite imagery, and the information provided by the relevant park or land manager.

Useful map layers may show:

  • Contours and elevation
  • Official trails versus informal paths
  • Water and wetlands
  • Forest cover and recent disturbances
  • Roads and access points
  • Property boundaries
  • Designated campsites
  • Avalanche or fire-related areas

Look for inconsistencies. If one map shows a trail that another omits, don't automatically assume one is wrong. It may be an unofficial route, an abandoned alignment, a newly constructed trail, or a line that is only useful at a different season.

Make sure your digital map is available offline, and carry a physical map and compass when the route is remote or navigation could be difficult. A downloaded map is helpful, but it doesn't solve battery, device, or signal problems.

Build a simple go/no-go screen

Before committing, write down the route's main advantages and its limiting factors. A route is often defined less by its average terrain than by its hardest section and least flexible night.

I use questions such as:

  1. Can the group comfortably cover each planned day with a full pack?
  2. Is there enough reliable water, with a sensible carrying plan?
  3. Are the intended camps legal, available, and spaced appropriately?
  4. Are crossings and exposed sections suitable for the expected conditions?
  5. Can we exit or shorten the trip if someone is injured or the weather deteriorates?
  6. Do we have current access information and a backup plan?

If any answer is unclear, that doesn't always mean the route is unsuitable. It means you have identified what needs to be resolved before departure. Sometimes the sensible choice is to shorten the route, add a rest day, change the season, or choose a less committing option.

Make the map work for you

A good map review doesn't eliminate uncertainty. It turns vague concerns into specific questions, which makes later research far more useful.

Start with the route's shape, divide it into realistic days, read the contours, mark water and camps, identify choke points, and verify access. Then compare your assumptions with current information from the responsible land manager and reliable local sources.

Once you've done that, you'll know not only how far the route goes, but where it may slow you down, where your options narrow, and what needs to be true for the trip to work. That's the kind of preparation that makes a route feel manageable before the pack goes on.
