A Rainy-Season Backpacking Route Strategy for the Pacific Northwest

A practical framework for choosing Pacific Northwest backpacking routes during prolonged wet weather, with an emphasis on drainage, creek crossings, campsites, and conservative planning.

Rain changes the Pacific Northwest from a collection of beautiful routes into a set of very different water-management problems. A trail that is comfortable in late summer can become muddy, slippery, flooded, or difficult to cross after several days of rain.

The best rainy-season strategy isn’t simply choosing the shortest or lowest-elevation route. It’s choosing a route that can absorb water without turning every decision into a gamble. That means looking closely at drainage, stream crossings, campsite options, bailouts, and the forecast before committing.

Start with the landscape, not the mileage

When I’m assessing a wet-weather route, I first consider how the terrain moves water. Broad ridges, well-drained benches, and established camps above major drainages are usually more forgiving than narrow valleys, boggy flats, and trails cut into steep slopes.

A route can have modest elevation gain and still be a poor choice in sustained rain if it follows a creek for most of the day. Water concentrates in gullies and valley bottoms, while side trails may become channels themselves. Conversely, a route with more climbing may offer firmer ground and safer places to camp.

Look for these features on a topographic map and satellite imagery:

  • Ridges or gently sloping benches that keep you above drainage channels
  • Broad valley sections rather than narrow canyon travel
  • Trails that cross streams at established, relatively level locations
  • Campsites on terraces or forested benches, not directly beside water
  • Alternate routes that allow you to leave the drainage if conditions deteriorate

Contour lines packed tightly beside a creek deserve extra attention. That combination often means a steep-sided valley, limited room to move, and fewer safe alternatives if the water rises.

Prioritize drainage over scenic proximity

Many popular Pacific Northwest campsites are attractive precisely because they sit near lakes, rivers, or waterfalls. In prolonged wet weather, that proximity becomes a liability. Water levels can rise, wind can push waves onto low shorelines, and the ground around a site can become saturated before the forest floor elsewhere does.

A good wet-weather campsite is slightly elevated, naturally level, and separated from obvious channels. Avoid depressions where water can collect, the outside of bends in creeks, and flat ground that appears to be an old floodplain. Also inspect the slope above camp. A site beneath unstable banks, dead trees, or saturated cliffs may be a poor choice even if it looks comfortable at first.

Established campsites can help reduce impact, but they aren’t automatically safe in every season. A site that was dry on your last trip may be unusable after a week of rain. If the ground is soft, standing water is appearing, or runoff is moving through the sleeping area, relocate before you unpack fully.

Treat “near water” and “beside water” differently

Water access is useful for cooking, but sleeping beside a creek is rarely worth the convenience. Choose a site close enough for a short collection trip, while leaving room for the waterway to expand. Keep food, clothing, and shelter well away from the active channel and any obvious high-water marks.

Never assume a calm-looking stream will remain calm overnight. Rain falling elsewhere in the watershed can arrive after the local sky clears.

Make creek crossings the route’s main question

In wet conditions, creek crossings often determine whether a trip is sensible. A route with one or two manageable crossings may be reasonable; a route with many crossings can become a chain of decisions with no easy escape.

Before choosing an itinerary, identify every marked crossing and then look for unmarked drainage lines. Topographic maps, trip reports, satellite imagery, and local trail information can reveal where water is likely to collect, but none of these replaces an assessment on the ground.

Use a conservative standard:

  • Don’t cross if the water is rising, discoloured, unusually forceful, or carrying debris.
  • Don’t rely on a log crossing simply because it is still in place.
  • Avoid crossings with deep pools, undercut banks, or a hazardous downstream consequence.
  • Keep footwear on and secure loose straps before entering moving water.
  • Unbuckle your hip belt and sternum strap so you can shed your pack if you fall.
  • Consider turning around early rather than trying to find a better crossing farther downstream.

Crossing advice is safety-critical and conditions vary rapidly. If a crossing is above your comfort level, the correct decision is to stop. A map line isn't a promise that the route remains passable.

Check the water before committing: On the day of your trip, compare current weather, trail reports, river or creek conditions where available, and any official alerts. Confirm that closures, crossing warnings, and access rules still permit the route you intend to use.

Build an itinerary with wet-weather margins

In a dry forecast, an itinerary may be based on distance and elevation. In prolonged rain, I’d plan around decision points instead. Mark places where you can turn back, camp early, leave the route, or wait for conditions to improve.

A useful itinerary includes:

  1. A conservative first-day destination, especially if the route begins with a major crossing.
  2. At least one realistic campsite before the planned destination.
  3. A turnaround time for each difficult section.
  4. Bailout routes that don’t depend on crossing the same swollen stream again.
  5. Extra food for an unplanned night or delayed exit.

Avoid planning a long day that ends at the only campsite in a drainage. If the site is occupied, flooded, or unsafe, you may have no good option. In wet weather, flexibility is more valuable than squeezing every kilometre out of the daylight.

It also helps to separate “possible” from “comfortable”. A route may technically be passable but still require wet scrambling, repeated thigh-deep crossings, or camping on saturated ground. Intermediate experience should make you more observant, not more willing to force a poor plan.

Use elevation strategically

Higher isn’t always better in the Pacific Northwest. Elevation can mean colder temperatures, snow, wind exposure, and fewer sheltered campsites. Lower routes may avoid snow but collect more runoff and become muddy or flooded.

The useful question isn't whether a route is high or low, but where it places you during the worst part of the weather. A sheltered forest bench can be preferable to an exposed pass, while a broad ridge can be safer than a narrow creek valley.

Check the forecast for the route’s actual elevations, not just the nearest town. Pay attention to freezing levels, wind, rainfall intensity, and the timing of the wettest period. A mild valley forecast can conceal winter conditions above the tree line.

Expect slower travel on wet trails

Mud changes the effort required for every kilometre. Roots, rocks, boardwalks, and wooden bridges become slippery, and wet vegetation can soak clothing even when rain has stopped. Steep trails may demand more concentration than their elevation profile suggests.

Plan shorter days than you would in dry conditions. Leave room for clothing changes, careful footing, navigation checks, and waiting at crossings. Trekking poles can improve balance, but they don’t make unstable slopes or swift water safe.

For navigation, protect paper maps and carry a reliable backup for electronic navigation. Heavy cloud, dense forest, and rain on a screen can make route-finding harder. Download maps before leaving service, and don’t assume a trail shown online is open, maintained, or easy to follow.

Choose routes with practical escape options

The strongest rainy-season routes are often less ambitious loops or out-and-back trips with several ways to shorten the objective. A loop that depends on one remote pass or one major ford has a single point of failure. An out-and-back route may feel less adventurous, but it lets you evaluate conditions and retreat using familiar terrain.

When comparing routes, ask:

  • Can I turn around before the most exposed section?
  • Is there a road, trailhead, ranger station, or other exit nearby?
  • Will an alternate route require another dangerous crossing?
  • Can I reach a safe campsite without continuing into worsening weather?
  • If my footwear and shelter become soaked, where can I dry out or wait?

Check access roads as carefully as trails. Rain can cause washouts, fallen trees, landslides, and flooding before you reach the trailhead. Parking and road conditions may also change the practical length of the trip.

Pack for wet decisions, not just wet clothing

Waterproof clothing matters, but dry sleep insulation and dependable navigation matter just as much. Use a pack liner or other reliable system to protect your sleeping bag, spare layers, first-aid supplies, and electronics. Keep a dry layer reserved for camp rather than wearing it during the approach.

A shelter with a genuinely usable vestibule makes cooking, changing layers, and managing wet gear easier. Ventilation is important too: a waterproof shelter can still become soaked inside from condensation. Choose camps with enough room to pitch the shelter away from runoff and avoid stretching it over depressions.

Bring enough fuel for delays, and understand any current restrictions on fires or stoves in the area. Wet wood isn't a dependable backup plan, and fires may be prohibited regardless of weather.

Make the decision at the trailhead

A route-selection strategy only works if you’re willing to change the route on departure day. Check the latest forecast and official conditions, then compare them with what you see at the trailhead: swollen ditches, flowing water across the road, saturated soil, or debris on the access route are useful evidence.

If the weather has been persistently wet, choose the route with the best drainage, the fewest consequential crossings, and the most bailout options—not necessarily the route with the best viewpoint or longest mileage.

The practical next step is to mark your proposed route’s drainages, crossings, campsites, and exit points on one map. Then create a shorter version that avoids the highest-risk section. If conditions are poor, you’ll already have a sensible alternative rather than making the decision tired, cold, and standing beside a rising creek.
