How to Plan a Coastal Backpacking Trip Around Tide Tables and Escape Points
A practical guide to planning coastal backpacking routes around tide windows, headlands, weather, and escape points in the Pacific Northwest and Atlantic Canada.
Coastal backpacking looks straightforward on a map: follow the beach, round a few headlands, and camp near the next sheltered cove. The difficulty is that the route changes with the water. A beach that is broad and easy in the morning can become a cliff-backed trap by afternoon, with waves leaving no safe way forward or back.
The solution isn’t simply checking the day’s high and low tides. A reliable coastal plan connects tide timing with headlands, weather, campsite options, and places where you can leave the shore. The aim is to build a route with choices, rather than one that works only if every estimate is perfect.
Start with the route’s non-negotiable sections
Before studying tide tables, mark the parts of the route that control the whole trip. These are usually:
- Headlands that can’t be crossed at high water
- Long stretches of sand, cobble, or tidal flat
- Rock shelves with no practical escape above them
- River mouths and estuaries
- Coves where surf can make a landing unsafe
- Campsites that are above storm surge and the ordinary high-tide line
A headland may appear to be only a short distance on the map but still take hours to pass. It might require a low-tide scramble, a handline-assisted section, or a detour inland. Treat each one as a route decision, not as a minor obstacle.
I like to create a simple route table before the trip. For each tidal feature, record the location, the approximate time needed to pass it, the preferred tide window, the bad-weather alternative, and the nearest exit. This makes the plan much easier to assess than a track line alone.
Read tide tables as route information
Tide tables tell you when water levels are expected to peak or fall at a reference station. They don’t tell you exactly when a particular beach, ledge, or headland becomes passable. Local shape, beach slope, swell, wind, and river flow can all change the usable window.
For planning purposes, ask four questions:
- What water level is the section passable at?
- How long will it take to reach and cross it?
- What tide will be rising or falling while I’m there?
- What happens if I arrive late?
A falling tide is often preferable for a section that becomes progressively more exposed, because more ground appears as you travel. But a falling tide can also leave you committed farther from an escape point. A rising tide may offer a larger margin at the start of a beach walk, then remove that margin behind you.
Don’t plan to arrive at a critical headland at the exact predicted low tide. Build in time for route-finding, slippery rocks, photography stops, heavy packs, and a slower-than-expected crossing. If a section takes 45 minutes in good conditions, it shouldn’t receive a 45-minute tide window.
Check the chart datum and station
Tide predictions are tied to a reference location and a chart datum. A tide station several kilometres away may be the best available source, but it won’t perfectly represent your section of coast. Look for local guidance from the park authority, coastal conservancy, marine chart, or experienced local sources.
The predicted height is also not the whole story. Strong onshore winds and low atmospheric pressure can push water higher than expected. Large swell can wash over shelves and beaches well above the tide line. In practice, a marginal passage is a poor passage when the forecast includes significant swell or onshore wind.
Before you commit to the shoreline: Confirm the tide station, datum, local passage guidance, and marine forecast for your exact section. Check whether the authority has closures, warnings, or seasonal restrictions, and don’t treat a predicted low tide as a guarantee of safe passage.
Build the day around headlands, not campsite distance
Many coastal itineraries are measured in kilometres. That can be misleading. A day with 12 kilometres of easy beach may be less demanding than a day with 6 kilometres of boulder shore and two tidal headlands.
Plan to reach each critical point with time remaining, rather than hoping to arrive just before the window closes. A useful sequence is:
- Leave camp early enough to reach the first tidal obstacle comfortably.
- Cross the most restrictive section while conditions are improving or still within the planned window.
- Pause at a safe, elevated location before committing to the next section.
- Keep a turnaround time for the final obstacle of the day.
- Reach camp with enough daylight to find a high-water site and set up.
The first obstacle often sets the day’s pace. If it requires a very low tide, your start may be determined by the water rather than sunrise. If it’s several hours away, add the time needed to move through loose gravel, driftwood, kelp, or slippery rock.
Avoid placing a critical crossing at the end of a long day. Fatigue affects balance and judgement, especially on wet rock with a pack. If possible, camp before the last complex headland and cross it early the next day.
Map escape points before you need one
An escape point is any practical way to leave the intertidal route: a trail, road, boat launch, beach access, forestry track, ranger station, or inland footpath. It should be more than a line on a digital map. Confirm that it is open, legal to use, connected to transport or a known pickup plan, and passable with a backpack.
Mark at least three kinds of escape point:
- Primary exits: the places you expect to use if the trip goes normally
- Weather exits: routes that avoid exposed beaches or headlands
- Emergency exits: the quickest realistic way to reach help
Some apparent exits aren't useful. A cliff-top trail may be inaccessible from the beach. A road may be private or gated. A river mouth may be crossable on one visit and dangerous on the next. A small cove may look suitable for a boat pickup but be unusable in surf.
For every exit, write down the direction of travel, approximate distance from the shoreline, landmarks, and what you’ll do after reaching it. Carry this information offline. A wet phone, poor reception, or a damaged charging system shouldn’t erase your options.
Use weather to adjust the tide plan
Tides are predictable; coastal conditions aren't. Wind direction, swell period, precipitation, fog, and river levels can make a normally manageable route unsuitable.
On the Pacific coast, long-period swell can surge across rock shelves even when the tide is low. In Atlantic Canada, wind-driven water, fog, cold temperatures, and rapidly changing sea conditions deserve equal attention. Heavy rain can increase creek and river flow, while strong onshore wind can make beach travel slow and exhausting.
Look beyond the general land forecast. Check the marine forecast, wind direction, wave or swell information where available, and warnings issued for the specific coastal area. Ask how those conditions affect the route you’ve chosen:
- Will waves reach the ledge I planned to use?
- Will a headwind make the beach section much slower?
- Could rain raise a crossing or make a cliff trail unstable?
- Will fog obscure blazes, landmarks, or the exit trail?
- Is there a sheltered campsite if conditions deteriorate?
A conservative plan treats bad weather as a reason to use an escape point, not as a challenge to overcome by moving faster.
Choose campsites above the water’s reach
A campsite beside the ocean can be deceptively comfortable. Look for a site well above the ordinary high-water line and away from creek channels, estuary margins, unstable banks, and the base of cliffs. Driftwood lines are useful clues, but they don’t account for storm surge or an unusually large wave.
Check the site in daylight, even if you expect to arrive late. Identify a higher backup area before pitching your shelter. Keep food, footwear, and loose equipment organized so you can move quickly if water or surf conditions change.
In some coastal parks, camping is limited to designated sites or requires a permit. Restrictions may also protect nesting wildlife, dunes, cultural sites, or fragile vegetation. Those rules vary considerably between jurisdictions, so confirm them for the exact park and season.
Have a simple go/no-go rule
A route plan becomes useful when it tells you when not to continue. Set rules before you’re standing at the obstacle with a tired group and a shrinking tide window.
For example, you might turn around if:
- You can’t clearly identify the route around the headland
- Waves are reaching the passage you intended to use
- The remaining tide window is shorter than your conservative crossing estimate
- The planned exit is inaccessible or conditions have changed
- Visibility makes navigation or hazard assessment unreliable
These aren’t signs of failure. They’re the purpose of planning. A coastal route should include a shorter version, a high-water alternative, and a way to finish without relying on luck.
Pack for the alternatives
The gear list should reflect your escape plan, not just the ideal route. Bring navigation tools that work offline, a reliable headlamp, extra food for an unplanned night, and layers suitable for wet and windy conditions. Waterproofing matters because a tide-related delay often becomes a wet-weather problem as well.
Depending on the route, you may also need footwear that performs on wet rock, trekking poles for uneven shore, a communication device, and a map showing inland contours and access roads. Don’t carry technical climbing or scrambling equipment unless you’re trained and the route specifically calls for it; equipment doesn’t turn an unsafe tidal passage into a safe one.
A practical final check
The evening before departure, compare the route against the latest conditions. Recalculate the critical windows if your start time, campsite, or direction changes. Tell a trusted person the route, planned exits, and the time by which you’ll check in. If you change plans, update them when you reasonably can.
The best coastal itineraries have room for an early finish, a missed headland, and a night spent somewhere other than the original campsite. Plan the tide windows carefully, but give yourself enough margin that the trip remains manageable when the coast behaves like a coast—not like the map.
