How to Choose a Desert Backpacking Route When Water Sources Are Seasonal

A practical framework for choosing a Southwestern desert backpacking route when springs, tanks, and other water sources may be seasonal or unreliable.

Desert routes can look deceptively manageable on a map. A line between two trailheads might be only a few days long, yet the trip can become demanding when a spring is dry, a tank is fouled, or daytime temperatures make every kilometre expensive.

When water sources are seasonal, route selection isn’t simply a question of distance or scenery. I look at the whole system: how much water the route can reasonably provide, how much I can carry, how exposed the walking will be, and how quickly I can leave if conditions change.

Start with water, not mileage

The first step is to mark every possible water source along the route, then separate potential water from reliable water.

Potential sources might include:

  • Springs and seeps
  • Creeks and washes
  • Stock tanks and cattle troughs
  • Small reservoirs
  • Seasonal pools
  • Water caches, where they’re permitted
  • Developed campgrounds or nearby facilities

A blue line on a map doesn’t guarantee water. A spring may stop flowing late in the season, while a creek can disappear underground in a dry wash. A stock tank may be inaccessible, contaminated, or empty. Treat every source as uncertain until you’ve checked recent, location-specific information.

For route planning, I prefer to identify a primary source, a backup source, and a carrying plan for the gap between them. If a route has only one possible refill point, it may be a poor choice even if that source has been dependable in previous years.

Investigate the source itself

“Water at kilometre 20” isn’t enough information. Try to find out:

  • Whether the source is flowing, pooled, or stored
  • How recently it was reported as available
  • Whether it’s reachable from the trail
  • Whether livestock or wildlife commonly use it
  • Whether treatment is likely to be difficult
  • Whether access is affected by private land, closures, or permits

Recent trip reports can be useful, but they’re observations rather than guarantees. A report from a wet spring may not apply after a hot, dry month. Look for patterns from several sources and compare them with official land-manager information where available.

Calculate your longest dry stretch

Once you’ve marked the water sources, measure the longest distance between realistic refill opportunities. Then estimate how many hours or days that section will take in the conditions you expect.

Distance alone can be misleading. Ten desert kilometres over easy ground may be a very different proposition from ten kilometres across loose sand, steep slickrock, or a route with repeated navigation stops. Heat can also reduce your useful walking hours, making a nominal one-day gap stretch into an overnight water carry.

A basic planning calculation is:

Water required = daily drinking water + cooking water + treatment or contingency reserve

Your personal requirement depends on temperature, exertion, body size, acclimatization, food, and how much shade the route offers. I don’t use a universal litres-per-day number as a guarantee. Instead, I look at my expected effort, add a margin for delays, and test the plan against the hottest and slowest reasonable day—not the optimistic one.

Include water for:

  • Drinking while walking
  • Cooking and hot drinks
  • An unplanned night
  • Navigation errors or route-finding delays
  • A dry or unusable source
  • Any required treatment backflush or equipment loss

If your estimated load is beyond what you can safely carry, the route isn’t ready to be chosen. A shorter route with two dependable refill options may be more appropriate than a famous route requiring an extreme carry.

Before you commit to the dry stretch

Check the latest land-manager updates, recent water reports, fire restrictions, closures, and access conditions for every planned source. Confirm that any cache, tank, campground, or refill point is legal and accessible on your dates. If the information is uncertain, plan as though the source may be dry.

Match the route to your carrying capacity

Desert water carries change the character of a trip. A pack that feels comfortable with food and three days of water can become awkward and punishing with an additional several litres.

Consider both your maximum physical load and your ability to move safely with it. Heavy water carries can increase foot problems, slow progress, and make heat exposure worse. They can also affect how much fuel, shelter, and emergency equipment you’re willing to bring—none of which should be removed casually to make the numbers work.

Before choosing a route, ask:

  • What is the largest water load I can carry while still walking safely?
  • Can I lift, filter, and pack that amount without damaging equipment or myself?
  • How does the load affect my speed on sand, rock, and climbs?
  • Do I have enough container capacity, not just a large filter?
  • What happens if the source is dry and I need to carry to the next one?

Container capacity is easy to overlook. A high-flow filter doesn’t help if you can’t collect enough water, and a soft bottle that works well at camp may be inconvenient for a long carry. Wide-mouth containers and a scoop can make shallow or muddy sources more practical, although every piece of equipment adds weight and another possible failure point.

Treat desert water as a logistics problem

Desert water often needs more than a quick filter pass. Sediment can clog filters, and stagnant sources may require careful collection and treatment. Let muddy water settle when time allows, pre-filter it through a clean cloth, and follow the treatment method’s instructions for viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and cloudy water.

Carry a backup treatment method that works with the sources you expect. A filter failure is more serious when the next possible refill is a full day away. Keep treatment supplies accessible rather than buried in the bottom of your pack.

Don’t rely on water you find at camp unless you’ve checked it before committing to the site. In desert terrain, the attractive campsite near a mapped spring may be less useful than a less scenic site that leaves you positioned safely for the next refill.

Evaluate heat exposure along the route

A route with adequate water can still be a poor choice if most of its walking is exposed during the hottest part of the day.

Study the route for:

  • Long stretches without shade
  • Dark rock or sand that radiates heat
  • South- and west-facing slopes
  • Steep climbs shortly after a refill
  • Narrow canyons where retreat is difficult
  • Sections that require scrambling or hand use with a heavy pack
  • Camp locations with limited shade or wind protection

In many desert environments, an early start can reduce heat stress, but it doesn’t eliminate it. Plan where you can rest during the hottest hours and whether those locations are actually suitable for a break. A shaded overhang may be too small, exposed to falling rock, or located far from a safe campsite.

Look at the route’s elevation profile as well as its map. A water source at the bottom of a canyon may require a difficult climb before the next safe camp. A route that finishes at a trailhead can still be risky if the final section is a sun-baked ascent with no refill option.

Build in escape options

An escape option is more useful when it’s identified before the trip, not improvised after a problem begins. Mark points where you can:

  • Reach a road or trailhead
  • Join a more frequently travelled route
  • Move towards a known water source
  • Contact a support person, if there’s coverage or an emergency communication plan
  • Shorten the trip without crossing another major dry section

Check whether roads are public, seasonal, high-clearance only, or gated. A line on a map may be a private road or a route that becomes impassable after rain. Likewise, a nearby trailhead may be separated from you by cliffs, washes, or a canyon with no safe crossing.

I prefer routes with several modest exit points over a single dramatic bailout at the end. If one member of the group develops heat illness, a foot injury, or equipment trouble, a nearby exit can matter more than the route’s overall distance.

Score candidate routes before choosing one

When I’m comparing routes, I use a simple scorecard rather than choosing the most attractive line on the map. Rate each route from one to five for:

Factor What to consider
Water reliability Number and quality of likely refill points; seasonal uncertainty
Maximum dry carry Weight, distance, and time between realistic sources
Heat exposure Shade, timing options, terrain, and expected temperatures
Navigation Route-finding complexity and consequences of mistakes
Escape options Roads, trail junctions, communication, and safe exits
Access and regulations Permits, closures, land ownership, and vehicle access
Group fit Fitness, experience, pace, and tolerance for heavy loads

A route doesn’t need the highest total score to be right for you. A group that’s comfortable navigating but struggles with heavy packs might prioritize reliable water and shorter carries. Another group may accept a more remote route if it has excellent shade and several bailout options.

The scorecard is also useful for finding the weakest link. If a route scores well everywhere except water reliability, don’t average that problem away. In desert travel, one uncertain source can control the risk of the entire itinerary.

Make a conservative final plan

Before departure, write down the water plan in a way someone else can understand. Include source names, expected distances, the amount you intend to carry, backup options, and the latest information you found. Share the route and an overdue plan with a trusted contact, following the requirements of the relevant land manager.

Keep the itinerary flexible. If a source is dry, temperatures are higher than expected, or the group is moving slowly, turn around or shorten the route early. The most sensible desert decision is often made while you still have plenty of water and daylight.

Start with a route whose water logistics are comfortably within your capacity. Then confirm the current conditions, check the access rules, and plan your walking hours around heat rather than trying to force a schedule designed for cooler terrain. In the desert, a route earns its place on the itinerary by being manageable when conditions are imperfect—not just beautiful when everything goes according to plan.
