What I Learned From Taking the Shortest Route Through Difficult Terrain

Why map distance can hide bogs, blowdown, steep ground, and slow travel—and how to compare routes more honestly.

A route can look appealing simply because it is short. On a map, a line that saves several kilometres may seem like the obvious choice, especially when the longer option follows a broad valley or a well-established trail. In difficult terrain, though, distance is only one part of the effort—and often not the most important one.

Bogs, tangled blowdown, steep slopes, loose rock, and poor route-finding can turn a short section into the slowest and most tiring part of a trip. The real lesson is simple: compare routes by time, energy, risk, and options—not by map distance alone.

Why the shortest line can be the slowest route

Most maps flatten a three-dimensional landscape into symbols and contour lines. A route may measure only a few kilometres while crossing ground that requires constant detours, careful foot placement, or hands-on scrambling.

A longer route on a trail or open ridge may offer steady progress. A shorter cross-country route may involve:

  • Climbing and descending repeatedly around obstacles
  • Searching for firm ground through wetlands
  • Crawling or stepping over fallen trees
  • Sidehilling on unstable slopes
  • Picking a way through dense vegetation
  • Backtracking when a visible route ends at a cliff, creek, or thicket
  • Stopping frequently to confirm the line of travel

Walking speed drops quickly when every step requires a decision. Even a fit backpacker can cover rough terrain more slowly than a loaded hiker on a maintained trail. The effort also accumulates: awkward movement uses more energy than ordinary walking, and fatigue makes navigation and foot placement less reliable.

Map distance hides more than elevation gain

Elevation gain is useful, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Two routes with similar distance and ascent can feel completely different on the ground.

Contour lines show shape, not surface

Closely spaced contours indicate steep ground, while widely spaced contours suggest gentler slopes. That information helps, but contours don't show whether the slope is covered in stable soil, loose scree, thick brush, or slick roots.

A route that crosses a steep slope diagonally may also be more demanding than a route that climbs directly and follows a flatter bench. Sidehilling can strain ankles and knees, make a loaded pack feel unstable, and become hazardous when the surface is wet or icy.

Small obstacles create large delays

A creek shown as a thin blue line might be a minor crossing in late summer and a serious obstacle after heavy rain. A patch of green on a map might represent open meadow, dense alder, or a wetland that doesn't support a person and pack.

Blowdown is another common source of hidden distance. One fallen tree is easy to step over. A large area of intertwined trunks can force repeated climbs, detours, and route changes. The map may show a straight line through the forest, but your actual path can become a series of wide, irregular loops.

Navigation has a time cost

Route-finding isn't free. When the way is unclear, you'll need to stop, check the map, identify terrain features, and choose the next safe passage. That may happen every few minutes in complex country.

A route with fewer obvious landmarks demands more attention than one that follows a creek, ridge, or marked trail. In poor visibility, the difference becomes even greater. A short route that depends on precise navigation can carry more mental fatigue than a longer route with clear features.

Compare routes by realistic travel time

Instead of asking, “Which route is shorter?” ask, “Which route is likely to get me there in the least time and with the most margin?”

Start with the route's distance and elevation gain, then add the factors that affect movement:

  1. Surface: Is the route on a maintained trail, open ground, talus, mud, or loose forest floor?
  2. Steepness: How much climbing is involved, and how sustained is it?
  3. Obstacles: Are there wetlands, dense vegetation, blowdown, cliffs, or difficult creek crossings?
  4. Navigation: Is the route obvious, or will it require constant route-finding?
  5. Pack weight: How will the terrain feel with your actual overnight load?
  6. Conditions: Could rain, snow, heat, darkness, or high water change the route?
  7. Exit options: Can you retreat or switch routes if the terrain is worse than expected?

A useful planning habit is to estimate the difficult section separately rather than applying one average pace to the entire day. For example, you might expect a reasonable pace on a trail but allow considerably more time for a short off-trail section with steep ground and blowdown. The exact numbers depend on your experience, fitness, pack, and terrain, so the value is in making the comparison—not in producing a perfect forecast.

Check the ground you’re about to cross: Before committing to a shortcut, review the latest weather, route reports, closures, fire restrictions, water conditions, and any local advisories. A route that is manageable in dry, stable conditions may be a poor choice after rain, snow, flooding, or a recent storm.

Use the map to look for terrain traps

A map can still help you reject bad shortcuts if you read it for more than distance.

Study the contours in detail

Look for tightly packed contour lines, sudden elevation changes, narrow benches, and slopes that continue for a long distance. A line that crosses several steep gullies will usually be slower than one that follows a consistent contour or uses a drainage with gentler grades.

Also note whether the route repeatedly loses and regains elevation. A shortcut that descends into a basin and climbs out again may save horizontal distance while adding unnecessary work.

Look for water and wet ground

Identify creeks, marshes, ponds, and broad flat areas where water may collect. Wet ground can be hard to recognize from a quick map glance, particularly when the map's scale is small.

Consider the season and recent weather. A crossing that looks simple on paper may be unsafe or time-consuming when water is high. If avoiding a crossing requires a long detour, include that possibility in your route comparison rather than assuming you'll find an easy way across.

Check satellite imagery and recent reports carefully

Satellite imagery can reveal open slopes, logging roads, dense vegetation, and possible trail lines. It can also be outdated, obscured by trees, or misleading because shadows hide steep terrain. Treat it as supporting information, not as a guarantee of what you'll find.

Recent trip reports, trail-condition updates, and local knowledge can help identify blowdown, washed-out bridges, overgrown sections, or changes that a standard map won't show. Conditions can change quickly, so reports are most useful when they are recent and clearly describe the season and route.

When a shortcut is still reasonable

The lesson isn't to avoid every route that leaves an established trail. Off-trail travel can be appropriate when the terrain is well understood, the conditions are stable, and you have enough time and skill to manage uncertainty.

A shorter route may make sense when:

  • The terrain is open and easy to read
  • The slope angle is moderate and consistent
  • There are reliable escape or turnaround options
  • Water levels and weather are favourable
  • You have enough daylight for delays
  • Your navigation tools and skills match the terrain
  • The time savings remain worthwhile if progress is slower than expected

The key is to define a decision point before you start. For example, if the route becomes significantly steeper, wetter, or more tangled than expected, turn around or use the longer alternative. Making that decision in advance is easier than trying to justify a deteriorating shortcut while tired.

Build a more honest route plan

For each route option, write down more than the distance. A simple comparison might include:

Add a time buffer for unfamiliar terrain and keep enough daylight to reverse course. If the shortcut is part of a longer day, consider how its difficulty will affect the rest of the route. Arriving at the next campsite late, dehydrated, or too tired to navigate well isn't a successful time saving.

The practical takeaway

Map distance is a measurement, not a prediction. Difficult terrain turns kilometres into decisions, detours, elevation changes, and extra effort. The more uncertain the surface and route-finding, the less useful a simple distance comparison becomes.

Before choosing the shorter line, examine contours, water, vegetation, obstacles, recent conditions, and your options if the route doesn't match the map. Estimate time conservatively, set a clear turnaround point, and keep a more predictable alternative available when possible.

The best route is rarely the one with the fewest kilometres. It's the one that gets you where you're going with a realistic amount of time, energy, and margin left for the unexpected.
