The Shortcut I Took Around a Mud Hole and the Trail Damage It Caused

A reflective account of why avoidance lines expand, how to choose durable passage, and what to do when a trail is already widening.

A mud hole can look like a small inconvenience: a dark patch across the trail, a few deep footprints, and a tempting strip of dry ground beside it. Stepping around seems harmless. It may even feel like the responsible choice, especially when you’re trying to keep your boots dry and avoid turning a manageable puddle into a deeper mess.

I’ve learned that the first shortcut is rarely the last one. Once one person walks around a muddy section, the next hiker sees a ready-made route. Soon the narrow detour becomes a second trail, and the original path keeps getting wetter, wider, and more damaged.

The lesson isn’t that every mud hole must be treated as a challenge. It’s that the best way around a wet section is usually not the route that looks driest.

Why a small detour becomes a large problem

Trail damage often starts with a reasonable decision. A hiker approaches a puddle and notices that the ground beside it is firm enough to support a boot. They step onto that edge, then return to the trail a few metres later.

The next person follows the same line. Repeated foot traffic presses down vegetation, loosens soil, and creates a visible path. Rain then runs along the bare ground instead of soaking into plants and undisturbed soil. The detour becomes muddier, so people move farther out. That creates another line.

This is how one wet spot can turn into a broad, braided section of trail. “Braided” means several informal routes run beside the intended path, often around a wet or damaged area. Each line can widen the disturbed footprint and make drainage more difficult.

The original mud hole may also become worse. Walking around it doesn’t remove the water. It leaves the trail surface vulnerable to more rain, snowmelt, and foot traffic. Without vegetation or a properly built surface to hold the edges together, the trail can erode from both sides.

The damage is especially easy to cause in places with thin soil, slow-growing vegetation, frequent rain, or heavy seasonal use. A shortcut that seems insignificant to one person can remain visible for years.

The durable choice is often the wet one

For most ordinary trail mud, the durable option is to walk straight through the established path rather than creating a new one beside it. This can mean accepting wet boots, dirty gaiters, or a few splashes.

That advice has limits. Don’t walk through water if you can’t see the surface and there’s a risk of a hidden hole, unstable ground, fast-moving water, or contamination. Don’t push through a section where the trail has collapsed or where the only route is unsafe. The goal is to stay on durable ground, not to prove that every puddle can be crossed.

When the trail itself is firm enough, a steady passage through the middle usually causes less long-term harm than spreading traffic onto its margins. Keep your feet on the existing hardened surface. Avoid stepping onto the plants or soft soil beside the trail just to find a dry landing spot.

A few simple habits help:

  • Slow down before entering the wet section.
  • Look for the firmest part of the existing tread.
  • Place your feet deliberately rather than walking along the edges.
  • Use trekking poles for balance if the surface is slippery.
  • Keep your group in the same established line instead of spreading out.
  • Leave room for other hikers without stepping off the trail.

Waterproof footwear can make this decision easier, but it isn’t essential. Gaiters, quick-drying footwear, and poles may reduce the inconvenience. The important part is resisting the instinct to protect your boots by damaging the trail.

Check the route before you commit: If the wet section is unusually deep, washed out, signed as closed, or affected by a recent storm, check current trail notices and follow local instructions. Conditions and access rules can change quickly, especially during spring thaw and heavy rain.

How to decide whether a passage is durable

Not every surface beside a trail is equally fragile. When you need to avoid a genuine hazard, look for ground that can withstand repeated use without creating a new track.

Rock is generally more durable than loose soil or vegetation. Gravel, sand, and dry mineral soil may also tolerate occasional passage better than moss, lichen, meadow plants, or muddy banks. In some environments, however, even apparently bare ground can be slow to recover.

A useful order of preference is:

  1. The existing trail surface, if it’s safe to use.
  2. Rock or other clearly durable surfaces.
  3. Firm, already-disturbed ground that isn't supporting plants.
  4. A route recommended or marked by land managers.

Avoid choosing a line through living vegetation simply because it looks dry. Low plants can be particularly vulnerable, and a faint animal path isn't necessarily a suitable human route. Wildlife tracks may lead through sensitive habitat, unstable slopes, or areas that are difficult to see from the trail.

Pay attention to how the ground handles your weight. If your boot sinks, leaves a deep print, or shifts loose soil, you’re probably making the problem worse. Stop and reassess rather than continuing until you’ve created a visible line.

What to do when the trail is already widening

An established braided section can be confusing. You may see several tracks, none of them obviously correct. The first response should be to avoid adding another option.

Look for the route that is most clearly established and safest to use. Sometimes it’s the original trail; sometimes the area has been rerouted or formally repaired. If signs, fencing, cairns, logs, or other markers indicate a preferred line, follow them rather than choosing whichever track appears driest.

If there is no clear route, don’t fan out across the whole area. Keep your group together and choose one durable line. Once you’re past the damaged section, return to the main trail as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Avoid moving rocks, branches, or other materials to build your own crossing unless local guidance specifically asks visitors to do that. An improvised structure can redirect water, create a hazard, or interfere with planned trail work. It’s also easy for a well-meant fix to become another obstacle for hikers, wildlife, or maintenance crews.

If a section is badly eroded, dangerous, or expanding rapidly, report it to the responsible land manager. Include the trail name, approximate location, and a brief description of the problem. A photo can help if it’s safe to take one without stepping off the trail or delaying other hikers.

The group effect matters

Trail damage is often a group decision, even when nobody discusses it. One person steps around the mud, and everyone behind follows. A leader who says, “We’ll take the wet part together,” can prevent a dozen people from creating a new line.

This is worth explaining to children and newer hikers without making it sound like a scolding. “We’re keeping our feet on the trail so it doesn’t get wider” is usually enough. It turns an inconvenient puddle into a small, practical lesson about shared spaces.

The same principle applies when travelling with dogs. Keep them on the established route where regulations allow dogs, and don’t let them run along the edges of a muddy section. Repeated paw traffic can widen a fragile trail just as quickly as boots.

A better way to remember the lesson

I don’t think the answer is to feel guilty about every muddy footprint. Trails are built to be used, and some wet ground is simply part of hiking. The useful question is narrower: am I passing through an existing durable route, or am I creating a new one because it’s more comfortable?

When the established tread is safe, walk through it. When it isn’t, look for rock, firm ground, or official guidance. If the trail is already spreading, choose one durable route and avoid adding another.

The next time a mud hole appears, pause before stepping sideways. Tighten your laces, reach for your poles, and take the short wet section on the trail. A little mud on your boots is usually a smaller cost than a widening scar beside the path.
