How to Read Wind Direction Before Choosing a High-Country Campsite
A practical guide to combining forecasts, landforms, vegetation, and nearby ridges to anticipate wind before choosing a high-country campsite.
A high-country campsite can look sheltered in the afternoon and feel completely exposed after dark. Wind often changes with slope, elevation, and the shape of the surrounding terrain, so a general forecast is only the starting point. The useful question isn't simply “Which way is the wind blowing?” but “Where will the air go when it reaches this particular camp?”
Reading that pattern takes a few minutes of observation and a willingness to move a little farther down the trail. In exposed mountain country, that small adjustment can mean a quieter night, a more secure shelter, and less trouble cooking or packing in the morning.
Start with the forecast, but don’t stop there
Wind forecasts are usually given for a broad area and a reference elevation. Your campsite may be several hundred metres higher or lower, on the lee side of a ridge, or inside a narrow valley where the local wind behaves differently.
First, note three things:
- The prevailing wind direction, usually expressed as the direction the wind is coming from.
- The sustained wind speed, which describes the general flow.
- The gust speed, which indicates the stronger, shorter bursts that matter most to tents and exposed camps.
A forecast calling for west winds means the air is moving from the west towards the east. This sounds obvious, but it is easy to confuse the source direction with the direction the wind is travelling. I find it helpful to picture an arrow pointing from the forecast direction towards the opposite side of the compass.
Check how the forecast changes through the evening and overnight, not just the daytime number. Mountain weather often shifts as heating from the sun fades. A slope that was calm while the valley was warm may receive downslope flow later, while a ridge can remain windy throughout the night.
The forecast may also describe wind at a standard height or a nearby weather station rather than at your exact camp. Treat it as regional context. The terrain in front of you is the next layer of information.
Confirm the night-time exposure: Before committing to a site, compare the latest local forecast with the actual wind at your elevation and check whether gusts or a wind shift are expected after dark. Follow current park, land-management, and fire regulations for the area.
Read the landforms around camp
Wind is air moving through a landscape. Ridges, passes, saddles, gullies, cliffs, and basins can speed it up, redirect it, or create turbulence. A good campsite isn't necessarily the lowest or most visually appealing spot; it is often the place where the terrain interrupts the strongest flow without creating other hazards.
Ridges and passes
Ridge tops and narrow saddles are usually the most exposed positions. Air crossing a high point can accelerate as it is forced over the crest. A pass may funnel wind between two higher slopes, producing a concentrated stream even when nearby basins feel calm.
If the route allows, look for a camp on the sheltered side of a ridge rather than directly on its crest. The lee side is the side away from the incoming wind. However, avoid assuming that the lee side will be perfectly calm. Air spilling over a ridge can curl and become turbulent, particularly below a sharp crest or around gaps in the terrain.
A small, rounded shoulder may offer a more comfortable compromise than a deep hollow. It can block the main flow without collecting cold air or runoff.
Valleys and gullies
Valleys often guide wind along their length. If the forecast wind is aligned with the valley, expect it to travel farther and more consistently than it might across an open slope.
Narrow gullies can act like wind channels. They may look protected because their floors sit below the surrounding terrain, but the air can accelerate through the constriction. Gullies are also poor choices for other reasons: they may collect water, loose rock, snow, or falling debris.
A broad basin can be more sheltered, but it can also develop drainage winds. After sunset, cooler air may flow downhill and settle in low areas. This can make a basin noticeably colder and occasionally breezier than a nearby bench or gently elevated site.
Cliffs and abrupt terrain
A cliff or steep rock wall can block wind from one direction, but it may also create eddies and unpredictable gusts. Don’t pitch immediately beside the wall just because the air feels still there. Look for signs of falling rock, unstable ground, and wind-driven debris. Leave enough space to avoid turning a sheltered pocket into a hazard zone.
Use vegetation as a wind record
Vegetation provides clues about both the current wind and the winds that have shaped the site over time. Krummholz, flag-shaped trees, bent shrubs, and vegetation growing more densely on one side of a slope can reveal the dominant direction.
A tree with branches swept consistently to one side suggests that strong winds usually arrive from the opposite side. Dead branches and stripped bark can reinforce the pattern. In alpine areas, low shrubs may be bent close to the ground, while isolated trees can show a more obvious lean.
These clues are useful, but they aren't a complete forecast. Vegetation may reflect seasonal winds, storms from one particular direction, snow loading, or the effect of a nearby rock wall. Compare several plants across the area rather than relying on one unusual tree.
Also consider what the vegetation can do during the night. A stand of trees may reduce wind, but dead limbs can become dangerous in strong weather. A campsite beneath or immediately beside mature trees deserves a careful overhead check, especially if the forecast includes gusts or rain.
Watch the landscape for real-time clues
Before setting up, spend a few minutes watching and listening. Wind can be invisible at ground level but obvious higher up.
Look for:
- Cloud movement over nearby ridges.
- Snow or dust being blown from a crest.
- Ripples moving across grass or alpine vegetation.
- Tree branches moving at different heights.
- Mist or low cloud being channelled through a pass.
- A steady roar that increases as a gust approaches.
Compare several elevations if you can see them. If the ridge is visibly moving while your proposed site is calm, the site may be sheltered—or it may be in a turbulent pocket. If gusts are arriving in pulses, expect the pattern to change as the wind interacts with the terrain.
A simple wind check is to release a small amount of loose grass, dust, or a few drops of water and observe the movement. Don’t scatter anything that could become litter, and don’t use a flame as a wind indicator. The goal is to confirm direction at ground level, not to replace the forecast.
Choose a site that shelters the shelter
Once I have an idea of the wind direction, I look for a site where the tent’s broadest surfaces aren't taking the full force of the flow. A narrow, protected bench behind a low rise may be preferable to an open flat area. The ground should still be reasonably level, well drained, and free of obvious rockfall or avalanche exposure.
Position the tent so its strongest structural elements face the expected wind. Follow the tent manufacturer’s guidance, but generally this means presenting the more aerodynamic end rather than a large side panel to the airflow. Use every suitable guyline, stake, and attachment point when conditions are exposed.
Shelter isn't a reason to ignore the ground. Avoid:
- Ridgetops and narrow saddles during strong or uncertain winds.
- Gullies, dry streambeds, and channels that can funnel water or air.
- Unstable slopes beneath cliffs or loose rock.
- Areas beneath dead branches or damaged trees.
- Cornices, avalanche paths, and runout zones where snow remains a concern.
- Fragile alpine vegetation when a durable site is available.
The best wind shelter is usually partial, not complete. A site with some airflow can dry condensation and avoid the stagnant, damp conditions that develop in deep hollows. It can also make it easier to assess what the weather is doing.
Account for changing wind patterns
Mountain wind rarely stays identical from afternoon to dawn. Solar heating, passing fronts, thunderstorms, and changing pressure can all alter its direction or strength. Local winds may also reverse over a daily cycle, with upslope flow during the warmer part of the day and downslope flow after cooling begins.
If the forecast is uncertain, avoid choosing a site that works only for one wind direction. A small rise, a broad stand of healthy trees at a safe distance, or a terrain feature that offers protection from more than one side gives you more margin.
Keep your shelter easy to adjust until you are confident in the conditions. Stake it before the wind rises, secure loose gear, and keep footwear and essential clothing inside the tent. If the wind becomes stronger than your shelter or site can reasonably handle, moving early is usually simpler than trying to repair a problem in darkness.
A practical campsite decision
I use a short sequence when assessing a high-country camp:
- Check the latest forecast for direction, sustained wind, gusts, and overnight changes.
- Identify the incoming direction on the map and in the landscape.
- Look for ridges, saddles, gullies, and vegetation that will redirect the flow.
- Observe actual movement at several elevations.
- Reject sites with rockfall, avalanche, flooding, dead-tree, or fragile-ground concerns.
- Choose a durable, reasonably level spot with partial wind shelter.
- Orient and secure the tent before conditions deteriorate.
- Reassess if the wind shifts, strengthens, or begins carrying snow, dust, or debris.
Wind reading isn't about predicting every gust. It is about combining several imperfect clues to avoid the most exposed and hazardous options. A forecast gives you the broad pattern; ridges and valleys explain how that pattern may reach camp; vegetation and real-time observations help confirm what is happening now.
When those clues disagree, I favour the site with more options: solid ground, a clear escape route, no overhead or slope hazards, and shelter from more than one likely direction. A few minutes of careful observation at the trail’s end can make the entire night more manageable—and can prevent a long, unpleasant search for a better campsite after the weather has already arrived.
