How to Read a Mountain Forecast for a Backpacking Trip

A practical guide to interpreting mountain forecasts in Western Canada, including temperature, wind, precipitation, freezing level, thunderstorms, and how to turn forecast information into safer daily decisions.

A mountain forecast is more than a high and low temperature. For a backpacking trip, it helps answer practical questions: Will the trail be dry enough to travel? Can I cross the pass safely? Will wind make an exposed ridge unpleasant or dangerous? Should I change my route or start earlier?

Mountain weather is also unusually difficult to predict. Conditions can change with elevation, aspect, and terrain, sometimes over a surprisingly short distance. I find it more useful to read a forecast as a decision-making tool than as a promise about what will happen.

Start with the forecast location and elevation

Before interpreting any numbers, check which point the forecast actually describes. A forecast for a nearby town or valley may be poor guidance for a pass, alpine basin, or ridge several hundred metres higher.

Look for an elevation-specific forecast when one is available. Otherwise, compare several sources:

  • A general forecast for the nearest community
  • A forecast for the park or mountain area
  • Observations from nearby weather stations
  • The forecast at a higher elevation, if available
  • Radar, satellite imagery, and weather warnings

Forecast models divide the landscape into grids, so a single forecast point can represent a broad and complicated area. It may not capture a sheltered campground, a wind-exposed col, or a narrow valley where cold air settles overnight.

I also check whether the forecast is in local time and when it was issued. Mountain decisions often depend on timing: rain arriving at 2 p.m. is very different from rain arriving overnight, even if the daily total is identical.

Read temperature as an elevation-dependent range

The listed high and low temperatures usually describe the forecast location, not every part of your route. Temperature commonly drops as you gain elevation, but the actual difference varies with the weather pattern, cloud cover, wind, and terrain.

A warm valley forecast can still mean chilly conditions at a high camp. Clear, calm nights can produce cold pockets in low areas, while cloud and wind may keep an exposed ridge warmer than expected. Treat the number as one input rather than a precise prediction for your tent site.

For each day, I consider three temperatures:

  1. The overnight low, which affects sleeping comfort, water freezing, and the performance of batteries and electronics.
  2. The daytime temperature, which affects clothing, hydration, and how hard the route will feel.
  3. The temperature at the highest point, especially if the route includes a pass, glacier approach, or exposed ridge.

Wind changes the practical experience considerably. A strong wind can make a moderate temperature feel much colder, reduce dexterity, and make breaks on an exposed summit unpleasant. It can also increase the effort required to walk and make tent setup difficult.

“Feels like” or wind-chill values are useful for understanding cold exposure, but they don’t replace the actual air temperature. Air temperature still matters for water, snow, equipment, and whether precipitation falls as rain or snow.

Look at wind speed, gusts, and direction

Wind is one of the most important—and most frequently ignored—parts of a mountain forecast. Don’t stop at the average wind speed. Check the gusts, direction, and the elevation where the wind prediction applies.

A route that is comfortable in a forest can become tiring or hazardous on an exposed ridge. Gusts can affect balance on loose terrain, make route-finding harder in blowing precipitation, and create problems when crossing open areas with a large pack.

Wind direction helps explain which parts of a route may be sheltered. It also gives clues about where precipitation might build up. Ridges, passes, and saddles can be much windier than nearby slopes, while a forested campsite may feel calm despite strong winds above it.

If I see increasing wind combined with rain, falling temperatures, or poor visibility, I treat that as a more serious change than any one of those details alone. Weather factors compound each other in the mountains.

Understand precipitation beyond “rain” or “snow”

The probability of precipitation tells you how likely measurable precipitation is in the forecast area; it doesn’t necessarily tell you how long it will last or how much will fall at your exact campsite. A lower probability can still produce a heavy shower, while a high probability may mean intermittent light rain.

Look at the expected amount and timing as well as the probability. A few showers during the afternoon may be manageable with an early start and reliable rain gear. Persistent rain overnight can create a different set of problems, including wet campsites, swollen creeks, and slower travel the following day.

At higher elevations, precipitation can change form during the same day. Rain may fall in the valley while wet snow or ice pellets affect a pass. Freezing rain and hail are less common but can make exposed terrain unpleasant and slippery very quickly.

The forecast may show precipitation totals in millimetres. Use those figures for comparison rather than assuming they describe exactly what will fall on your tent. Mountain terrain produces local variations, and convective showers can be particularly uneven.

Pack and plan for the colder, wetter possibility when the route is remote or difficult to retreat from. That doesn’t mean carrying every item for winter conditions on a summer overnight trip; it means understanding what your clothing, shelter, and route plan can safely handle.

Use the freezing level correctly

The freezing level is the approximate elevation where the air temperature is 0°C. It’s valuable for judging whether high sections of a route could see snow or icy conditions, but it isn’t the same as the snow line.

Snow can fall below the freezing level, especially during heavy precipitation. Existing snow can remain on shaded slopes below it, while sun-exposed areas may be bare above it. The freezing level can also rise and fall during the day or shift substantially as a front moves through.

Compare the freezing level with:

  • Your highest pass or campsite
  • North-facing and shaded sections of trail
  • Any snowfield, glacier, or steep lingering snowpack
  • Creek crossings that may be affected by rain and snowmelt
  • The expected overnight temperature

A freezing level close to your route’s highest point deserves extra attention. Wet trails may become icy overnight, and precipitation that begins as rain can turn to snow as the temperature drops.

Treat thunderstorm information as a timing problem

Thunderstorms can be more important than the daily temperature. Lightning, sudden wind, heavy rain, hail, and rapidly changing visibility can all affect a backpacking route.

Pay attention to the expected timing and whether the risk is described as isolated, scattered, or widespread. Those terms don’t guarantee what will happen at your location, but they help indicate how broadly storms may develop.

High, exposed terrain deserves particular caution when storms are possible. A plan that involves travelling along a ridge or reaching a summit in the afternoon may be less sensible than starting early, taking a lower route, or turning around before the weather builds.

If thunder is audible or lightning is visible, leave exposed terrain and avoid becoming committed to a pass or ridge. Choose a safer location based on local guidance and the terrain available; don’t wait for the storm to arrive directly overhead before changing plans. A forecast can help with timing, but it can't remove the need to watch the sky.

Check the mountain picture before you leave
On the morning of your trip, compare the latest park or regional forecast with current weather warnings, radar or satellite imagery, and nearby station observations. Check again before committing to a high pass, ridge, or exposed campsite. If conditions are worse, arriving earlier, choosing a lower route, or turning back may be the sensible decision.

Read the forecast as a timeline

A daily summary hides useful information. I look at the forecast hour by hour—or in the smallest time blocks available—especially for the period when I’ll be above treeline or crossing a pass.

Ask:

  • When does precipitation begin?
  • Is the wind increasing or decreasing?
  • Does the freezing level change during the day?
  • Are thunderstorms more likely in the afternoon?
  • Will cloud lower enough to affect navigation?
  • Is the forecast becoming more uncertain later in the trip?

Then compare that timeline with your itinerary. A pass reached at 8 a.m. isn't the same pass reached at 3 p.m. Build in time for route-finding, breaks, and a turnaround rather than planning around an ideal walking speed.

Watch for forecast uncertainty

Forecast confidence generally decreases with time, and mountain forecasts can be uncertain even within the next day. Disagreement between forecast sources is useful information: it may indicate a changing weather system or conditions that are difficult to model.

Ensemble forecasts, when available, show a range of possible outcomes rather than one precise prediction. A narrow range can suggest greater confidence; a wide range means I’m more cautious with fixed plans, particularly on exposed routes.

I’m also wary of forecasts that change significantly from one update to the next. The exact reason matters less than the practical message: keep the itinerary flexible and avoid making the most consequential part of the trip depend on a narrow weather window.

Turn forecast details into decisions

A useful forecast reading ends with a plan, not just a collection of numbers. For each day, decide:

  • What time you’ll start
  • Which sections require good visibility or calm conditions
  • Where you can turn around or take a lower alternative
  • How much extra food and water you need if progress slows
  • What weather would make you stop for the day
  • Where you could camp safely if the route changes

I prefer conservative decisions when the route is remote, exposed, or difficult to retreat from. A forecast doesn’t need to look dramatic to justify a change; a modest combination of wind, rain, low cloud, and cold can be enough to turn a straightforward day into a poor one.

Check the forecast shortly before departure, then keep observing conditions as you travel. Clouds building faster than expected, wind shifting, temperatures dropping, or visibility deteriorating are all reasons to reassess. The best mountain forecast is the one you combine with what the landscape is telling you in real time.

For your next trip, mark the highest and most exposed points on the route, check the forecast specifically for those places, and write down a clear turnaround time. That small amount of planning makes the forecast much easier to use when the weather starts changing.
