How to Read Contour Lines When the Trail Description Is Vague

A practical guide to using contour lines to estimate steepness, identify terrain features, and make better route decisions when a trail description leaves out important details.

A vague trail description can make a straightforward route sound mysterious. “Follow the ridge, cross the creek, then climb to the lake” may be all you have, but a topographic map can fill in much of what the description leaves out.

Contour lines show the shape and steepness of the land. Once you know how to read their spacing and patterns, you can anticipate long climbs, find gentler traverses, identify drainage gullies, and spot places where the route may become difficult to follow.

Start with the contour interval

A contour line connects points at the same elevation. The difference in height between neighbouring contour lines is the contour interval. You’ll usually find it in the map legend or margin, often stated in metres on Canadian maps.

For example, if the contour interval is 20 metres, every line represents a 20-metre change in elevation from the next line. A group of five lines therefore represents 100 metres of vertical difference, whether those lines are close together or spread across a large area.

Before interpreting the terrain, check three details:

  • the contour interval
  • the map scale
  • the direction of north

Thicker, labelled lines are index contours. They make it easier to work out elevations quickly. If you can identify one labelled contour, count up or down from it to estimate the height of nearby terrain.

A contour interval tells you the vertical change, but not the horizontal distance. You need the map scale, grid, or a ruler to estimate how far apart the lines are on the ground.

Check the map before you commit: Confirm the contour interval, scale, map date, and north reference on the sheet or mapping app you’re using. Older maps may not show newer trails, reroutes, roads, or closures, and magnetic declination changes over time.

Read the spacing to judge steepness

The simplest rule is this: close contour lines mean steep ground; widely spaced lines mean gentle ground.

Imagine two hills that both rise 200 metres. On the first, the contour lines are packed into a narrow strip. On the second, they spread over a long slope. The first hill will demand more effort over a shorter distance, while the second may provide a gradual ascent.

When a trail description mentions a “short, steep climb,” look for a cluster of closely spaced contours along the route. A “long climb” may show many contour lines spread over a considerable distance. It can still be tiring, but the grade may be more manageable.

Spacing can change along a single slope. Lines that begin far apart and gradually tighten indicate a slope becoming steeper. Lines that spread out near the top suggest a gentler finish or a rounded shoulder.

Avoid judging the terrain from one isolated gap. Look along the whole route and consider whether the contours are regular, interrupted, or squeezed into a narrow valley.

Recognize a ridge and a spur

A ridge is a long, raised area with lower ground on both sides. A spur is a smaller projection extending from a ridge or hill.

On a topographic map, contour lines often form elongated shapes along a ridge. The highest ground may appear as a series of closed loops, a broad crest, or a narrow strip between two drainage systems. A trail following a ridge may have fewer sustained climbs than a trail crossing from valley to valley, but it can still include repeated ups and downs.

A spur often appears as a series of contours that bulge outward from higher ground. If a route description says the trail “drops onto a shoulder” or “follows a spur,” look for this protruding terrain between two gullies.

Ridges aren't always wide or comfortable. A narrow ridge can have steep slopes on both sides, exposed sections, or difficult route-finding in poor visibility. The contour pattern may reveal the narrowness even when the trail description doesn't.

Find gullies, valleys, and drainage routes

A gully is a narrow depression where water commonly collects or flows. Larger, broader depressions form valleys. They are important because they can guide travel, but they can also create obstacles such as steep banks, thick vegetation, mud, or stream crossings.

On a map, contour lines crossing a drainage feature usually form a V shape. The point of the V generally points uphill, towards the head of the gully or valley. Water flows in the opposite direction, downhill from the point of the V.

This is one of the most useful patterns to recognize. If the V points north, the drainage rises towards the north and descends towards the south. If you’re trying to determine which way a creek is flowing, compare the V shapes with the surrounding elevation lines rather than relying on the trail description alone.

Several narrow V shapes close together may indicate a deeply cut or complex drainage area. A trail that crosses these features could involve repeated dips and climbs, even if the route looks fairly direct on the map.

Remember that a mapped stream may be seasonal, while an unmapped drainage may still be wet or difficult to cross after rain or snowmelt.

Identify a bench or terrace

A bench is a relatively level strip partway up a slope. It may be natural, created by old glacial or river processes, or associated with a road or former route.

On a contour map, a bench often appears as a band where contour lines run widely spaced for a distance, with closer lines above and below it. This pattern suggests a gentler shelf between steeper slopes.

A bench can be useful when a trail description says it traverses “along the hillside” or “contours around the basin.” It may offer a more gradual alternative to climbing directly over a hill. However, a narrow bench can also end abruptly at a gully or cliff, so follow the contour pattern beyond the obvious flat section.

A bench isn't necessarily level enough for comfortable walking. Small dips, wet ground, talus, and fallen timber may not appear at the map’s scale.

Locate saddles and passes

A saddle is a low point between two higher areas, similar to the dip between two peaks. A larger saddle may function as a pass between valleys or drainages.

On a topographic map, a saddle is often visible where two hilltops or ridges sit opposite each other and the contours narrow into a lower crossing point. It may look a little like an hourglass, with higher ground on two sides and lower routes leading away in the other directions.

Saddles are common route choices because they provide a natural way through a ridge. They can also be windy, snowy, muddy, or difficult to identify when several faint paths meet. If a vague description says “cross the pass,” find the saddle first, then examine the approach from both sides.

The easiest-looking approach on the map may not be the safest or most obvious on the ground. Check for cliffs, very tight contours, avalanche terrain, or a drainage that forces a steep ascent.

Use the map to question the trail description

A trail description is a useful summary, not a complete terrain model. If it says “climb gently to the lake,” but the contours are tightly packed, plan for a steep section. If it says “follow the valley,” look for side gullies and stream crossings that may complicate the route.

Trace the route in sections rather than trying to understand the entire trip at once:

  1. Mark the starting elevation and the first major feature.
  2. Follow the route across each contour line.
  3. Note where the lines tighten, spread out, or form sharp V shapes.
  4. Identify likely ridges, saddles, benches, and drainage crossings.
  5. Estimate where the route could become unclear or leave the mapped trail.

Crossing many contour lines doesn't automatically mean a difficult climb. Direction matters. A route crossing lines at a shallow angle may gain elevation gradually, while one cutting straight across them may climb steeply.

Watch for route-finding trouble

Contour lines can highlight places where navigation deserves extra attention:

  • a trail disappears near a creek crossing
  • several gullies meet beneath a ridge
  • a route switches back across a steep slope
  • two similar saddles sit close together
  • the trail leaves a clear valley and enters open forest
  • the mapped path ends before the destination
  • a faint route follows a bench that is interrupted by cliffs or gullies

At these points, use the map with a compass, GPS device, visible landmarks, and the terrain itself. Don’t rely on a single digital track or a trail description that may have been written under different conditions.

Contour lines also have limits. They may not show small cliffs, dense deadfall, narrow game trails, recent washouts, or a seasonal watercourse. A map can tell you that a slope is steep, but it can't fully describe how loose, wet, brushy, or exposed that slope will be.

A simple way to practise

Choose a familiar local trail and study its topographic map before walking it. Predict where you’ll find the steepest climb, the main drainage, and any flat benches or saddles. Then compare your predictions with what you see on the ground.

This exercise builds the connection between the two-dimensional map and the terrain around you. With practice, a vague description becomes a series of useful questions: Where does the route gain height? Which side of the ridge is it on? Where will water collect? What is the easiest-looking way through?

When planning an unfamiliar trip, mark those answers before leaving. Carry a map and compass even if you expect to use your phone or GPS, and make a conservative plan for steep sections, poor visibility, and changing conditions. A few minutes spent reading the contours can save a great deal of uncertainty after the trail description runs out.
