How to Navigate a Snow-Covered Trail Without Following Old Tracks Blindly

A practical guide to navigating winter trails by combining map evidence, terrain, weather history, and the reliability of existing tracks instead of following footprints automatically.

Snow can make a familiar trail look reassuringly simple. A line of footprints leads through the trees, the route appears to be heading in roughly the right direction, and following it feels easier than making your own decisions.

That’s exactly when I slow down.

Old tracks are evidence, not instructions. They may belong to someone who turned around, took a shortcut, became lost, or travelled under conditions that no longer exist. Wind can erase the useful parts of a track while leaving a misleading section intact. Snowfall can also cover hazards, junctions, streams, and the summer trail itself.

A safer approach is to combine several types of evidence: your map, the shape of the terrain, recent weather, your intended route, and the quality of the tracks you find.

Start with the summer route—but don’t assume winter follows it

A summer trail is a useful reference, not a guarantee of the best winter line. In snow, the most efficient or safest route may shift around a frozen wetland, a steep sidehill, a creek, or an area prone to avalanche activity.

Before leaving, study the route at a scale that shows more than the trail line. Look for:

  • Contour spacing, which indicates slope angle and changes in steepness
  • Ridges, spurs, gullies, and broad benches
  • Lakes, rivers, bogs, and other large landscape features
  • Avalanche paths, runout zones, cornice-prone ridges, and terrain traps
  • Clearings or viewpoints that can help confirm your position
  • Junctions, bridges, cabins, and other mapped landmarks

If the map shows a trail crossing a slope, ask whether the winter version would put you beneath a slope above you. A summer footpath may traverse terrain that is uncomfortable or dangerous when loaded with snow. In other places, the trail may disappear beneath a frozen lake or merge into an open snowfield where there’s no obvious line to follow.

The route on your map tells you where the trail is supposed to go. The terrain tells you what is actually possible today.

Read the terrain before reading the tracks

When I reach a set of tracks, I first ask whether they make sense in the landscape. Are they heading towards the mapped pass, lake, or ridge? Do they follow a natural contour, or do they drop into a gully for no clear reason? Is the slope ahead consistent with the route I planned?

Useful terrain features are often more reliable than a faint path. A stream, ridge crest, prominent knoll, or distinct bend in a valley can act as a handrail: a feature you can follow while maintaining general direction. An attack point is a recognisable feature near your destination, such as a junction or a small lake. A catching feature is something beyond your objective that would tell you you’ve gone too far, such as a major river or a road.

For example, rather than thinking, “I’ll follow these tracks until I find the cabin,” I might plan: “I’ll travel up this broad drainage, confirm the sharp bend shown on the map, then leave the drainage at the marked spur. If I reach the main ridge, I’ve gone too far.”

That plan still works if the tracks vanish.

Treat old tracks as a confidence clue, not a route marker

Tracks can help with orientation, but their reliability depends on what they reveal. Consider:

How fresh are they?

Crisp edges, undisturbed snow, and visible tread patterns may suggest recent travel. Rounded edges, wind fill, drifting snow, or a layer of new snowfall suggest that the tracks are older or partly obscured. Even fresh-looking tracks might have been made hours or days earlier; snow conditions and wind can change quickly.

Are they continuous?

A track that disappears at a wind slab, creek crossing, or open area isn't necessarily a problem. But repeated breaks make it harder to know whether you’re following a complete route or reconstructing someone else’s navigation.

What made them?

Snowshoe prints, ski tracks, boot prints, animal trails, and snowmobile tracks have different implications. A ski track may take a line that is awkward on foot. An animal trail may be easy to follow but lead nowhere useful. A snowmobile track may appear to be a maintained route but could be private, seasonal, or unsuitable for walking.

Do they show a sensible objective?

Tracks leading towards a known trail junction are more useful than tracks that wander, split repeatedly, or end at a viewpoint. A neat line isn't proof that its maker knew where they were going.

Whenever the tracks disagree with the map and terrain, I trust the map-and-terrain combination first—then reassess rather than forcing the tracks to fit.

Use weather history to explain what you’re seeing

Weather from the past few days can change both the appearance of the route and the meaning of existing tracks.

Recent snowfall may have buried the original trail, filled depressions, and hidden footprints. Wind may have scoured one ridge while depositing deep drifts in a gully. A thaw followed by a freeze can create a hard surface that preserves old marks but makes travel more hazardous. Warm temperatures can weaken snow bridges over streams or create unstable cornices and wet-snow hazards.

Before setting out, think through the sequence rather than checking only the current forecast:

  • When did the last significant snowfall occur?
  • Which slopes and openings have been exposed to wind?
  • Have temperatures risen and fallen enough to create a crust?
  • Is rain, heavy snow, or strong wind expected during the trip?
  • Could a creek crossing, lake crossing, or snow bridge have changed?
  • Has visibility been poor enough that recent travellers may have made navigational errors?

Weather history won’t tell you exactly where someone went, but it can explain why their line shouldn't be copied. A track made during firm, clear conditions may be unusable after a storm. A route that was reasonable in stable snow may now pass through terrain you should avoid.

Navigate in short, verifiable stages

Long compass bearings are difficult to maintain in featureless snow, especially in trees or poor visibility. Break the route into legs between features you can confirm.

A practical leg might run from a trailhead to a creek, from the creek to a broad ridge, and from the ridge to a marked junction. Before leaving each feature, note your intended direction, approximate distance, and what you expect to see along the way.

Use the compass to maintain direction, but don’t rely on it alone. A bearing can be accurate while your position is wrong. In terrain with limited visibility, use a combination of:

  • Compass bearings
  • Pacing or travel-time estimates
  • Contour interpretation
  • GPS position checks
  • Terrain features that you can identify confidently

A GPS or mapping app is valuable for confirming your general position and checking the shape of the route. It isn’t a substitute for knowing how to navigate when batteries fail, reception is poor, the map data is incomplete, or the device leads you towards an unsafe slope. Keep the device protected from cold, carry backup power, and make sure your map is available offline if you’re relying on digital mapping.

If the displayed location conflicts with what you see, stop moving. Check the map datum or route file if relevant, compare the terrain with the contours, and work out whether the error is in your position, your interpretation, or the data.

Build in deliberate stop points

Snow travel can make small errors expensive. A missed junction or gradual drift in direction may not become obvious until you’re far from the intended route.

Choose stop points before you need them. At each one, ask:

  1. Where does the map say I am?
  2. What terrain feature confirms that position?
  3. What direction should the next leg take?
  4. What would indicate that I’m off route?
  5. What is my turnaround point?

If you can't answer the first two questions, don’t continue simply because the tracks look promising. Retrace your steps while your route is still clear, or stop in a safe location and reorient yourself.

In poor visibility, a partner can improve safety if both people participate. One person can lead on the bearing while the other checks the map and terrain, but switch roles and communicate regularly. Avoid allowing one person to follow silently for hours without knowing the route.

Check the winter picture before you commit: Confirm the current weather, avalanche information where applicable, trail or access closures, and any local restrictions for your route. Conditions and regulations can change after your map or guidebook was published.

Know when the route has become a safety problem

Navigation is only one part of the decision. If the route enters avalanche terrain, navigation choices must be made alongside appropriate avalanche training, equipment, and current conditions. A map can identify a slope; it can't tell you that the slope is safe today.

The same applies to river and lake crossings. Snow-covered water can look continuous, while weak ice or a collapsing snow bridge may be hidden beneath the surface. If the crossing isn’t clearly safe, find an alternative or turn around. A set of old tracks isn't proof of adequate ice, and it doesn’t tell you whether the previous traveller crossed at the same time of year.

Turn around when visibility prevents you from confirming the next leg, when conditions are changing faster than expected, when you’re losing the route repeatedly, or when continuing would leave no sensible margin for the return trip. A route that is technically possible may still be a poor choice if you’ll be navigating it in darkness or worsening weather.

A simple field routine

Before following any track, pause and complete this sequence:

  1. Locate yourself: Use the map, compass, GPS, and visible terrain together.
  2. Identify the objective: Know what feature you’re trying to reach next.
  3. Inspect the tracks: Consider their age, continuity, maker, and direction.
  4. Compare evidence: Do the tracks agree with the contours, terrain, and weather history?
  5. Choose a short leg: Set a bearing or handrail and define a stop point.
  6. Check progress: Confirm your position before committing to the next leg.
  7. Keep an exit: Know where you’ll turn around and how you’ll return.

This routine takes little time, but it prevents a common winter mistake: replacing navigation with hope.

The useful lesson to carry forward

Old tracks can save time and provide helpful clues, especially when they align with the map, terrain, and recent conditions. They become dangerous when they remove your willingness to question the route.

On a snow-covered trail, I want several independent signs pointing the same way. When they don’t, I stop, recheck my position, and choose the route I can justify—not simply the one that looks easiest to follow. Before your next trip, practise identifying handrails, attack points, and catching features on a map, then use them on a short winter outing where turning around is straightforward. That preparation is what keeps a vanished trail from becoming a serious problem.
