How to Cross a Scree Slope Without Sending Rocks Onto the Trail Below
Practical guidance for crossing loose scree while reducing rockfall risk to yourself and people below, with advice on route choice, spacing, foot placement, and pacing.
A scree slope can look like a simple walk across a pile of stones. In practice, it’s a moving surface with several ways to turn a careful crossing into a serious problem. A boot can dislodge a rock, a trekking pole can start a small slide, or one person’s poor route choice can send debris towards a trail, campsite, or climbing party below.
The safest approach is to treat scree as an active hazard rather than ordinary terrain. Choose the least troublesome line, keep your group controlled, and move in a way that limits both slips and falling rock.
Assess the slope before you step onto it
Stop in a safe place and study the entire crossing. Don’t focus only on the next few metres. Look for where the slope begins, where it ends, and what lies directly below it.
Identify:
- People or groups travelling beneath the slope
- Trails, scrambling routes, gullies, campsites, or roads in the fall line
- Large blocks that could move if disturbed
- Narrow bands of loose rock beneath cliffs or rock faces
- Firmer ribs, ledges, vegetation, or exposed bedrock that might provide a better route
- The runout area, where dislodged rocks are likely to stop
A slope with small, stable stones may be easier than one covered in larger blocks that can roll unpredictably. On the other hand, fine gravel over hard slabs can be extremely slippery. Colour and appearance aren’t enough to judge stability; watch how the surface behaves when lightly tested from a secure stance.
If the slope is actively shedding rocks, has fresh debris across the route, or funnels directly onto people below, wait, choose another line, or turn around. A slower route is usually preferable to forcing a crossing in a bad position.
Before you commit to the traverse: Check the fall line, wait for clear space below, and confirm that every member of your group understands the route and spacing. If you can’t keep rocks away from people or valuable routes beneath you, don’t cross that line.
Choose the least loose line
The shortest route isn’t necessarily the safest. Look for terrain that gives your feet something predictable to stand on.
A shallow traverse across smaller, compacted material may be manageable. A route that climbs or descends slightly to reach a band of bedrock can be better than a direct line across deep, shifting scree. Ridges and shallow ribs often collect less loose material than depressions, while gullies tend to concentrate both rocks and water.
Avoid stepping directly above a person whenever possible. If the slope allows it, use a line that keeps your group out of one another’s fall zones. Also avoid crossing immediately below someone who’s moving on loose terrain. Give them time to finish, reach a secure position, or move well to one side.
When route-finding, distinguish scree from talus. Scree usually consists of smaller, loose fragments and gravel. Talus has larger blocks, which may be more stable but can shift or roll if poorly balanced. Both require care, but the correct technique differs. On large blocks, test each landing and watch for rocks balanced on other rocks. On fine scree, focus on maintaining an even, controlled platform rather than kicking material downhill.
Put your feet down deliberately
The main goal is to keep your weight over a stable foothold and avoid creating unnecessary movement.
Use short steps. Place your entire foot on the surface rather than landing on the edge of a boot. Keep your feet relatively flat, with your knees slightly bent, and avoid sudden pivots. A controlled, quiet step is a useful test: if the stone shifts noticeably, transfer your weight back and choose another foothold.
Don’t stamp down to “set” a loose rock. That can destabilize the rock and anything below it. Instead, probe lightly with a boot edge or trekking pole from a secure stance. If the surface gives way, stop and reset rather than trying to ride out the movement.
Keep your centre of gravity over your feet. Leaning hard into the slope can make a slip more likely if the uphill foot slides. Leaning downhill is worse: it can accelerate a fall and make it harder to stop without sending debris with you.
On a traverse, face generally into the slope when the angle or surface demands it, but don’t twist your body so far that your feet lose a natural position. On a gentler slope, a diagonal walking stance may provide better balance. The correct position is the one that lets you move slowly while keeping both feet and, when needed, a hand or pole in controlled contact.
Use trekking poles carefully
Poles can improve balance, but they can also pry loose stones from the slope. Place the tip gently and avoid driving it into a pile of unstable rocks. If a pole catches or slips, don’t yank it sharply; recover your balance first.
On steeper or more technical terrain, poles can become a nuisance if they prevent you from using your hands effectively. Stow them when scrambling is required, and make sure they’re secure so they can’t fall downslope. A loose pole can become a hazard for anyone below.
Your hands shouldn’t be used to grab random blocks for support. A rock that looks solid may be resting on loose material. Test handholds before committing your weight, and avoid pulling down on blocks that could dislodge.
Manage spacing in a group
Spacing is one of the simplest ways to reduce rockfall risk. Don’t move as a tight line across a loose slope. If one person slips or knocks a stone loose, the people immediately below have little time to react.
Instead, cross one at a time or maintain enough horizontal separation that a moving rock won’t strike the next person. The right distance depends on the slope angle, rock size, visibility, and the ability to communicate. On a narrow route, that may mean waiting in a protected spot until the person ahead reaches secure terrain.
The leader should choose the route and move far enough ahead to avoid putting the next person directly in the fall line. The last person needs to know the planned exit and should check that no one is below before starting. Keep packs secured, with loose straps tucked away; a dangling strap can catch or affect balance.
Use clear, agreed-upon commands. “Rock” should mean that something is moving downhill, not that someone has noticed a loose stone. Point to the location if you can do so without losing balance, and warn people below even if the rock appears small. Don’t shout casually across a slope, where the message may be misunderstood.
Control your pace
Scree rewards patience. Rushing causes long steps, hard braking, and foot placements that are difficult to evaluate.
Move at a steady pace with frequent pauses in secure spots. Before each step, identify where your foot will land and where you’ll go next if that foothold shifts. Keep your pack balanced and avoid reaching far to the side. If you need to stop, stop with both feet on a stable surface rather than halfway through a stride.
Descending usually requires more caution than ascending because your weight and momentum naturally move towards the fall line. Use shorter steps, keep your knees flexed, and avoid sliding your feet through loose material. A controlled plunge step may work in deep, soft scree on some slopes, but it can also send a stream of rocks downhill. Use it only where the runout is clear and the surface is suitable.
If you start to slip, try to turn your body across the slope and regain contact with a stable surface rather than allowing yourself to accelerate downhill. Don’t grab blindly for loose rocks. If a fall becomes unavoidable, protect your head and move away from the fall line if you can do so without creating more danger.
Know when to stop
Turn around or find another route if the slope is steeper, looser, or more exposed than expected. Other warning signs include repeated movement under light pressure, poor visibility, wet or icy surfaces, strong winds, and the inability to communicate with your group.
A helmet may be appropriate where rockfall from above is possible, particularly below climbing terrain or in a route known for loose rock. It isn’t a substitute for route selection, spacing, and waiting for a clear fall line. Check current local guidance for the route and conditions, since requirements and hazards vary by area.
Once you reach stable ground, move well clear of the slope before regrouping. Don’t stop immediately at the bottom of a scree field if another party could still be crossing above you.
Practical next steps
Before your next trip, practise crossing short, low-consequence loose slopes with a full pack. Work on quiet foot placement, gentle pole use, and stopping on stable ground. Review the route’s map and recent conditions, identify who could be below you, and agree on communication signals before the group starts.
