What to Do When a Tent Pole, Buckle, or Stove Fails Mid-Trip

A practical field guide to diagnosing and repairing failed tent poles, buckles, and stoves, with sensible decision points for continuing, changing plans, or turning around.

A broken piece of gear can turn a straightforward day into a decision-making exercise. The repair itself is often manageable; the harder question is whether the repair will remain reliable in wind, rain, cold, or darkness.

When something fails mid-trip, I use three priorities: protect people from immediate exposure, make the simplest dependable repair, and reassess whether the trip still makes sense. A clever fix is useful only if it keeps working when conditions deteriorate.

Start with a quick failure assessment

Before unpacking every repair item, get yourself and your gear into the safest nearby position. Move off the trail, away from falling branches, and out of surf or moving water. If weather is worsening, deal with shelter and warmth before attempting a tidy repair.

Then ask four questions:

  1. What has actually failed? Is a component broken, detached, jammed, bent, or merely loose?
  2. What does it support or control? A non-essential pocket buckle is different from a tent pole supporting the roof.
  3. Can the repair be inspected easily? A visible splint is easier to trust than a hidden knot or taped connection.
  4. What happens if it fails again? Consider exposure, injury, navigation, food, and your ability to leave.

If the answer to the last question is serious, treat the repair as temporary and change the plan accordingly.

Repairing a broken tent pole

A tent pole failure is usually an issue of structural support. The goal isn't to restore the pole perfectly; it's to spread the load across the damaged section and prevent further splitting.

Use a pole sleeve first

A purpose-made pole repair sleeve is the cleanest solution. Slide it over the break, centre it, and secure it with tape if it moves. If the pole is still under tension, release the tent's load before fitting the sleeve. Forcing a sleeve over a sharply bent section can make the damage worse.

A spare section of pole can work in the same way if its diameter is compatible. Don't assume a piece from another tent will fit securely just because it looks close. A loose sleeve can slide off when the tent flexes.

Make a field splint

If you don't have a sleeve, use a rigid item that is longer than the damaged area. A tent stake, trekking-pole section, short stick, or suitably stiff repair strip may work. Pad sharp edges so they don't cut the pole or tent fabric, then bind the splint tightly with repair tape, athletic tape, cord, or a small strap.

Wrap beyond both ends of the break. Several firm wraps placed under tension are generally more useful than a large, loose bundle of tape. If the pole is made from aluminium, avoid crushing it while tightening the splint. If it is fibreglass, watch for sharp fibres and cover the damaged area before handling it.

Reduce the load on the repair

A splinted pole may hold during calm weather but fail under wind or accumulated rain. Re-tension the tent gently rather than pulling the damaged pole back into its original shape. Use additional guylines where the tent design allows, and choose the most sheltered site available.

If the pole is supporting the inner tent but the fly can be pitched separately, that may provide useful protection. It isn't a substitute for a sound shelter in severe weather, though. If the tent can no longer keep sleeping gear dry or withstand expected conditions, move to a safer option or leave the area.

Fixing a failed buckle or strap

Buckle failures are inconvenient, but many can be bypassed because the strap's main job is tension or closure rather than structural support.

Replace the buckle with a temporary closure

A short length of cord, webbing, or a small carabiner can hold a pack strap, compression strap, or tent-closure point. Thread the strap through the carabiner and secure the loose end so it can't work free. A prusik-style hitch or a simple stopper knot can prevent slipping on smooth webbing.

For a pack hipbelt or shoulder strap, take extra care. A temporary connection that slips may cause the load to shift, which can affect balance and increase fatigue. Keep the pack lighter if possible, tighten it gradually, and inspect the connection each time you stop.

A spare side-release buckle is worth carrying if your pack, hipbelt, or other equipment uses a common size. Some replacement buckles can be installed without sewing by routing the existing webbing through the replacement. Others require cutting or stitching, so check the design at home rather than discovering this beside a river.

Use tape carefully

Tape can hold a buckle in position or stop a strap end from fraying, but it isn't a reliable replacement for load-bearing stitching. If webbing has pulled out of a seam, a cord-and-carabiner bypass is often more dependable than trying to tape the seam back together.

If a pack component is failing but the pack remains comfortable and stable, redistribute weight. Keep dense items close to your back and avoid overloading the damaged side. A repair that works for a short walk may not be appropriate for a full day of rugged travel.

Troubleshooting a failed stove

A stove problem needs a slower approach because fuel, heat, and pressure can create a hazard. First move the stove away from tents, dry vegetation, loose clothing, and other combustible material. Let it cool before inspecting it.

Check the simple causes

Depending on the stove type, common causes include:

  • an empty or poorly connected fuel canister
  • a blocked jet or burner
  • a clogged fuel line or filter
  • a loose valve or damaged seal
  • a canister that is too cold to provide useful pressure
  • a windscreen restricting airflow or overheating the fuel container

Don't poke randomly at a jet with a sharp object or disassemble a pressurised fuel system in the field unless the manufacturer specifically supports that procedure. Clear only the parts intended for user maintenance, and keep fuel away from flames while checking connections.

For a canister stove, confirm that the canister is upright or positioned as the stove instructions require. Never use a windscreen that traps heat around a canister. For liquid-fuel stoves, allow the unit to cool and follow its normal depressurising and cleaning process rather than improvising with a pressurised connection.

Decide whether cooking is still practical

If the stove won't produce a stable flame after basic checks, don't keep relighting it indefinitely. A weak or erratic flame can waste fuel and create more risk than a cold meal. If you have an alternate stove, cold-soak meal, or food that needs no cooking, use that while keeping the failed stove isolated.

A stove failure becomes a trip-planning problem when it affects hydration, not just dinner. In areas where drinking water must be treated by boiling, use an appropriate backup treatment method if you carry one. Otherwise, consider your remaining water, fuel, food, and distance to a reliable exit before continuing.

Check your cooking and fuel plan: Before relying on a repair or substitute stove, confirm the current rules for fires and fuel use in the area, and follow the appliance manufacturer's instructions for your specific fuel system. Fire restrictions, transport requirements, and safe operating guidance can vary by jurisdiction and season.

When a repair means turning around

I treat a repair as acceptable when it is visible, testable, and unlikely to create a serious consequence if it fails. I become much more conservative when the failed item affects shelter, warmth, navigation, water, or the ability to carry an injured person.

Turn around or shorten the trip when:

  • your shelter can't reliably protect you from forecast conditions
  • the repair depends on constant attention or repeated retightening
  • you can't cook or safely treat water with your remaining supplies
  • the pack no longer carries comfortably or securely
  • the failure leaves you unable to manage an injury or emergency
  • daylight, weather, or route difficulty leaves little margin for another problem
  • continuing would consume your only realistic exit option

You don't need to wait for a complete failure. If a pole is visibly bending, a buckle is tearing out, or a stove connection smells of fuel, change plans while you still have choices.

Carry a small repair kit

A practical kit for multi-day trips can include:

  • a tent-pole sleeve or short splint
  • repair tape wrapped around a card or trekking pole
  • a few metres of strong cord
  • a small length of webbing
  • spare buckles matched to your pack or shelter
  • a needle and strong thread for non-critical fabric repairs
  • small scissors or multitool
  • zip ties
  • a lighter kept protected from moisture
  • stove-specific maintenance parts recommended by the manufacturer

Test the kit at home. Practise splinting the actual tent pole, routing your pack's webbing through a replacement buckle, and identifying the stove's shutoff and serviceable parts. Familiarity saves more time than carrying a large collection of gadgets.

Make the next decision deliberately

Once the repair is complete, test it in a controlled way. Put light tension on a strap, flex the tent gently, or run a stove briefly in a safe location. Watch for movement, heat where it shouldn't be, fuel odour, slipping knots, and new cracks.

Then calculate the remaining margin: distance, daylight, weather, water, food, warmth, and available help. If the repair has reduced that margin too far, turning around isn't a failure of skill. It's the sensible use of it.

The best field repair is the one that gets you safely to the next decision point. Sometimes that means carrying on with a sound temporary fix. Sometimes it means packing up early, protecting the damaged gear, and walking out before a small problem becomes the trip's defining emergency.
