Why I Started Building Backup Plans for the Boring Problems

A practical reflection on the overlooked failures that can derail a backpacking trip, with a simple backup-planning system for transport delays, dead batteries, missing permits, wet fuel, and other boring problems.

Most backpacking problems aren’t dramatic. They’re usually small, tedious failures that arrive at the wrong time: a shuttle is late, a phone battery dies, a permit email can’t be found, or your fuel gets soaked before dinner.

None of these problems sounds like a wilderness emergency on its own. Together, though, they can turn a straightforward trip into a rushed, expensive, or unsafe one. I started building backup plans for these boring problems because they’re predictable enough to prepare for—and disruptive enough that improvising rarely feels clever when you’re tired.

The goal isn’t to carry a solution for every possible failure. That would produce an overloaded pack and a complicated trip. The goal is to identify the few failures that could strand you, separate you from food or shelter, or push you into making poor decisions, then create a simple second option.

Boring problems become serious through timing

A dead battery at home is an inconvenience. A dead battery when you’re trying to find a trailhead, show a reservation, or contact a shuttle operator can become a logistical problem.

Wet fuel is annoying when you have time to dry it. It’s more serious after a long day, in cold weather, or when you’re relying on that stove to melt snow or prepare water.

A delayed bus may be harmless if you’ve left a full day of flexibility. It can be costly if missing it means losing the only connection to a remote trailhead.

The common factor is timing. A minor failure becomes important when there’s no easy replacement, no phone service, or no daylight left. My planning has changed from asking, “What could go wrong?” to asking, “Which small failure would be hardest to solve at this particular point in the trip?”

That question usually produces a short, useful list rather than an anxious inventory of disasters.

Start with the trip’s critical links

Before packing, I sketch the trip as a chain of links:

  1. Getting to the trailhead
  2. Finding the correct access point
  3. Meeting permit or reservation requirements
  4. Carrying enough food and water treatment
  5. Staying warm and sheltered
  6. Navigating between planned campsites
  7. Returning home

Then I look for links with only one point of failure. If a single missed connection, damaged item, or forgotten document can break the chain, that link deserves a backup.

For example, a route might depend on a particular shuttle, a digital permit, one phone for navigation, and one stove system. That doesn’t mean I need to duplicate everything. It means I should decide what happens if each item or service is unavailable.

A useful backup is usually one of three things:

  • A physical substitute: a paper map, printed reservation, lighter, or dry bag
  • A time buffer: arriving early, leaving an extra day, or planning a shorter first day
  • A decision rule: knowing in advance when to turn around, reroute, or stop waiting

The third option is easy to overlook. A backup plan isn’t only equipment. It’s also permission to change the plan before a minor problem becomes a major one.

Transport delays need time and information

Backcountry transport often involves several separate services: a train or bus, a local taxi, a park shuttle, and perhaps a water crossing. If one runs late, the rest may not wait.

I now treat transport as part of the route rather than as something that happens before the route begins. That means checking the connection points and asking:

  • What’s the latest arrival time that still allows a safe start?
  • Is there another shuttle, taxi, or public transport option?
  • Can I walk to the trailhead, or is the access road unsuitable or closed?
  • Where can I stay if I need to start the next morning instead?
  • Who needs to know if my plan changes?

A buffer is often more useful than a heroic connection. If missing one bus could force a night beside a road or an unsafe late start, I’d rather build in time than depend on perfect timing.

Keep important phone numbers offline, including transport operators, accommodation, an emergency contact, and the relevant park or trail office. Download maps for the access area, not just the trail itself. A navigation app may show the route while you have service, but that doesn’t guarantee the information will remain available later.

Check the links before you leave: Confirm current schedules, access conditions, shuttle arrangements, and cancellation policies directly with the transport operator or land manager. Services and road conditions can change seasonally, and a saved screenshot may no longer reflect the day you travel.

Dead batteries deserve a physical backup

A phone can be a camera, map, permit wallet, weather source, and emergency communication device. That convenience also creates a single point of failure.

My basic system is simple: start with a fully charged phone, carry a power bank that has enough capacity for the trip, and pack the correct charging cable somewhere protected from rain. I keep the phone in a low-power mode when I don’t need it and avoid using it as a constant entertainment device.

I also carry the information I’d need if the phone stopped working:

  • A paper map and compass
  • A written route outline, including campsites and exit points
  • Important booking or permit details
  • Emergency contact information
  • A note showing the vehicle location or return transport plan

A power bank isn't a complete backup if it’s stored in the same unprotected pocket as the phone. Keeping charging equipment in a waterproof pouch helps prevent one wet pack or leaking bottle from disabling the whole system.

For longer or more remote trips, I consider how I’d communicate without a mobile network. The right choice depends on the route, expected coverage, group size, and current guidance. Satellite communication and emergency devices also require charging, registration, and familiarity with their functions; owning one isn’t the same as having a working plan.

Permits are easier to replace when you prepare early

Permits and reservations create a different kind of failure. The problem may not be that the permit is gone, but that you can’t prove you have it when asked.

I save confirmation emails and documents offline, then carry a paper copy when the trip depends on a specific reservation, quota, or campsite. I also write down the permit number, date, party size, and any vehicle details. If a permit needs to be collected in person, I note the office location and opening hours rather than relying on memory.

This is especially important when plans change. A permit for one date, trailhead, or campsite may not automatically cover a revised itinerary. I don’t assume that a confirmation is transferable or that arriving later is acceptable.

Confirm what your permit actually covers: Check the current rules for the park, conservation area, or trail authority before departure. Verify dates, access points, campsite assignments, vehicle requirements, fees, and change or cancellation procedures; these details vary by jurisdiction and can change between seasons.

Wet fuel is a small problem with a narrow solution

Fuel failures are often preventable because the cause is obvious: a stove or fuel canister has been exposed to rain, a fuel bottle wasn’t closed properly, or fire-starting materials were packed where condensation could reach them.

I keep fuel and ignition supplies separate from wet gear. A stove goes in a small protective bag, and fire starters are divided between at least two dry locations. For liquid fuel systems, I check the bottle, cap, pump, and seals before leaving home. For canister stoves, I make sure the canister is compatible with the stove and that I’m not assuming a partially used canister will last longer than it realistically can.

A lighter and waterproof matches are a useful pair of backups, but they’re not substitutes for dry storage. If all your ignition sources are in one pouch, one leak can defeat the redundancy.

I also consider what happens if the stove fails completely. Can I eat the food without cooking? Do I have enough water already available? Would a cold meal be acceptable for one night, or would the failure become dangerous in the conditions I’m expecting?

Fuel and fire rules are location-specific. Some areas restrict open fires or certain stove types, particularly during periods of elevated wildfire risk. The safest plan is the one that works within the current restrictions, not the one that assumes a fire will be available as a fallback.

Use a three-layer backup system

For most trips, I find three layers enough:

1. Prevent the failure

Charge devices, waterproof documents, test the stove, check transport connections, and pack fuel correctly. Prevention is lighter than replacement.

2. Carry a modest substitute

Bring the paper map, spare ignition source, offline permit, power bank, or no-cook food that addresses the specific weak link. The substitute should be simple enough that I’ll actually use it.

3. Set a decision point

Decide what will trigger a change of plan. Examples include leaving the trailhead by a certain time, turning around when visibility drops below a safe level, stopping at the last reliable campsite, or abandoning a transport connection after a defined wait.

Decision points reduce the temptation to keep pushing just because the original plan looked tidy on paper. They also make group discussions easier: the change is based on an agreed threshold, not whoever happens to be most optimistic at the time.

Keep the plan visible and usable

A backup plan hidden in a long note on a phone isn’t much help when the phone is dead. I keep the essentials short enough to fit on one sheet or a small card:

  • Primary route and fallback route
  • Transport contacts and times
  • Permit and reservation details
  • Emergency contact
  • Key turn-around or delay decisions
  • Where the backup items are packed

I share the itinerary with someone at home and tell them when to expect an update. I include the route, vehicle information, planned campsites, and the point at which they should become concerned. That person needs to know what to do if I’m overdue, rather than simply knowing that I’m somewhere in the mountains.

The best backup plan is boring before the trip and almost invisible during it. That’s a good sign. It should reduce decisions, not create a second expedition inside the first one.

I still won’t prepare for every inconvenience. I’ll accept a little uncertainty, because that’s part of backpacking. But I’ll protect the links that are difficult to replace: safe transport, reliable navigation, legal access, warmth, food, and communication.

Before your next trip, trace the route from your front door to your return journey. Identify the three links with the fewest alternatives. Add one physical backup, one time buffer, or one clear decision rule to each. Then test the plan at home—before a boring problem has a chance to become the main event.
