The Gear Swap Checklist for Buying Used Backpacking Equipment
A practical checklist for inspecting used tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and stoves before buying, so budget-conscious backpackers can avoid expensive surprises.
Buying used backpacking gear can stretch a small budget a long way. It can also leave you with a tent that leaks, a sleeping pad that goes flat overnight, or a stove that isn’t compatible with the fuel available on your trip.
The key is to inspect equipment as if you’ll need it tomorrow, not as if you’re buying a bargain for some vague future adventure. Cosmetic wear is often harmless. Damage to waterproofing, insulation, load-bearing parts, or fuel systems deserves much more caution.
Start with the deal, not the discount
Before meeting the seller, find the exact model and compare it with the manufacturer’s current specifications. Older versions may look almost identical while using different pole fittings, valves, fabrics, or fuel connections.
Check the original packed size, weight, capacity, and intended use. A “two-person” tent may be comfortable for one person with gear but cramped for two. A lightweight backpack may not carry the load you’re planning to take.
Ask a few direct questions:
- How long have you owned it?
- How often was it used?
- Was it stored clean and completely dry?
- Has it been repaired, modified, or exposed to smoke, pets, or strong odours?
- Why are you selling it?
- Are all the original parts included?
A vague answer isn’t proof that the gear is bad, but it’s a reason to inspect it more carefully. If the seller won’t let you examine or test the item, walk away. A low price doesn’t compensate for equipment you can’t trust.
Used tent inspection checklist
A tent has several systems to check: fabric, waterproof coatings, seams, poles, zippers, and small hardware. Set it up fully if you can. Looking at a tent while it’s stuffed in a sack tells you very little.
Fabric and waterproofing
Hold the tent body and fly up to the light. Look for pinholes, thinning fabric, abrasion, mildew, and areas where the coating is flaking or becoming sticky. Pay close attention to the floor, corners, pole sleeves, and the sections that contact the ground.
Inspect the fly from both sides. A small patch can be a perfectly reasonable repair. Widespread peeling, brittle fabric, or a strong chemical smell may indicate failing waterproof coating. That can be difficult to restore economically.
Check every seam. Seam tape that is lifting, bubbling, or becoming gummy is a warning sign. If the tent relies on seam sealing rather than factory-taped seams, look for complete and tidy coverage. A few minor touch-ups are manageable; extensive resealing takes time and may still not solve a coating problem.
Poles, clips, and zippers
Assemble the poles and check each section for bends, cracks, crushed ends, or stretched shock cord. Confirm that the pole tips fit the grommets and that the clips attach securely. Replacement sections may be available for some brands, but don’t assume they’ll be cheap or easy to find.
Run every zipper several times. It should move smoothly without separating behind the slider. Check the zipper teeth, pulls, storm flaps, and mesh panels. Torn mesh is repairable, but large holes can allow insects into an otherwise sound shelter.
Finally, make sure the tent includes its fly, poles, clips, guylines, and a usable stuff sack. Missing stakes are usually easy to replace. Missing poles or a fly can turn a bargain into an expensive project.
Inspecting a used backpack
A pack’s most important parts are the shoulder straps, hip belt, harness, frame, stitching, and adjustment points. Put weight in it—books or water bottles work—and wear it for several minutes.
Check whether the hip belt rests comfortably on your hips and whether the shoulder straps can be adjusted without reaching their limits. If the pack is the wrong torso length, no amount of tightening will make it fit properly.
Look closely at:
- Stitching around the shoulder straps and hip belt
- Load lifters and sternum strap attachments
- Frame stays, stay pockets, and frame connection points
- Buckles, webbing, compression straps, and daisy chains
- Bottom panels and corners, where abrasion is common
- Zippers and the roll-top or drawcord closure
Light dirt and scuffed fabric are usually cosmetic. Frayed load-bearing stitching, cracked plastic hardware, bent stays, or torn fabric around the harness can become serious problems under a full load.
Open every compartment and inspect the inside. A pack may have hidden mildew, leaking food residue, or damage from rodents. Check whether the rain cover is included, but remember that a rain cover isn’t a substitute for protecting sensitive contents inside waterproof bags.
Sleeping bags: focus on insulation and storage
A used sleeping bag can be excellent value, but its condition matters more than its appearance. Spread it out and check the shell, lining, seams, zipper, hood, footbox, and draft collar.
For down bags, gently shake and loft the insulation. Look for thin or empty areas, especially along baffles and around the footbox. A few loose feathers are normal. Large areas with poor loft may mean the down has shifted, become contaminated, or suffered moisture damage.
For synthetic bags, check for flattened insulation, clumping, or thin sections. Synthetic fill naturally loses loft with use, and a bag that looks clean may still be less warm than it originally was.
Run the zipper from end to end. Make sure the slider doesn’t snag the fabric and that the zipper closes completely. Examine the hood drawcord, footbox seams, and any integrated pad straps.
Odour is important. A persistent musty, smoky, or heavily perfumed smell can be difficult to remove. Ask how the bag was stored. Long-term compression can damage loft, particularly when a bag has been kept tightly packed for years. A storage sack or loose storage method is a positive sign.
Don’t rely on the original temperature rating without considering the bag’s age, condition, your sleep system, and the conditions you expect. Ratings are useful for comparison, not a guarantee that every sleeper will feel equally warm.
Sleeping pad leak test
Inflate the pad completely and leave it inflated while you inspect the rest of the gear. If possible, let it sit for several hours or overnight. A slow leak may not be obvious during a quick meeting.
Listen and feel around the valve. Check the valve body, cap, seams, and corners for bubbling, separation, or soft spots. For a small pad, you can use soapy water to help find a leak, but rinse and dry it thoroughly afterwards. Avoid soaking a pad unnecessarily, especially if you can test it by leaving it inflated.
Look for delamination, which can appear as bubbles or raised sections inside the pad. These areas can affect comfort and may continue to spread. Inspect the fabric for punctures and repairs, and ask whether a patch kit or valve tool is included.
Lie on the pad for several minutes. Make sure it holds your hips and shoulders comfortably and that its length and width suit your sleeping position. A pad that is technically functional but too narrow may make for a miserable night.
Stove and cookware checks
Treat used stoves as safety equipment. Inspect the burner head, pot supports, control valve, hose, pump, seals, and ignition system. Look for corrosion, damaged threads, cracked fuel lines, and heat damage.
If the stove uses a canister, verify that the connection matches the fuel canisters available where you plan to travel. If it uses liquid fuel, check the pump and bottle system for compatible parts. Don’t assume that an adapter or replacement seal will be easy to source.
Ask to see the stove operate, but test it outdoors in a clear, well-ventilated area away from flammable materials. The flame should be steady and controllable. Stop immediately if you smell fuel, see fuel escaping, or notice an uneven flare. Never test a fuel-burning stove inside a home, vehicle, tent, or other enclosed space.
Check that the pot supports lock into position and that the stove sits level. Inspect cookware for loose handles, cracks, severe dents, and damaged non-stick coatings. Minor soot is normal for some liquid-fuel systems; heavy corrosion or damaged fittings isn't.
Confirm the fuel plan before you buy: Check the stove’s exact fuel type and connection against the fuel sold along your route, plus any current transport, storage, or park rules that apply to your trip. If you can’t get the right fuel safely and legally, the stove isn’t a bargain.
Decide what is repairable
Some defects are reasonable bargaining points:
- Dirty fabric that can be cleaned safely
- Missing ordinary tent stakes
- A worn stuff sack
- A small, soundly patched hole
- Replaceable shock cord
- A buckle or zipper pull that has an available replacement
Be more cautious with problems involving waterproof coatings, load-bearing stitching, insulation loft, pad delamination, cracked poles, or fuel systems. Add the cost of parts, shipping, and your time before deciding what the item is worth.
If the price approaches that of a new entry-level product with a warranty, buying new may be the more sensible choice. The cheapest purchase is the one that works reliably when you need it.
Do a shakedown before the real trip
After buying used gear, test it at home and then on an overnight close to help and transport. Set up the tent in the rain if practical, wear the loaded pack on a walk, sleep on the pad and in the bag, and operate the stove outdoors with the fuel you intend to use.
Clean and dry everything according to the manufacturer’s care guidance. Replace questionable cord, repair small tears, and label unfamiliar parts. Keep a short list of anything that still needs attention.
A careful inspection won’t eliminate every risk, but it will catch most expensive surprises. Take your time, ask specific questions, and be willing to leave a deal behind. Used gear should help you get outside more often—not give you a new problem to carry down the trail.
