How to Choose Backpacking Footwear for Mud, Scree, and Long Road Walks
A terrain-based way to compare trail runners, hiking shoes, and boots without treating one footwear type as universally correct.
Choosing backpacking footwear gets easier when you stop asking which type is “best” and start asking what the trail will demand from your feet. Mud, loose scree, and long stretches of pavement each reward different characteristics. A shoe that feels brilliant on a dry forest trail can become miserable when the route turns into a slippery bog or several hours of road walking.
Trail runners, hiking shoes, and boots can all be sensible choices. The right one depends on terrain, pack weight, weather, trip length, and how well the footwear fits your feet. My starting point is always the route rather than the category printed on the box.
Start with the terrain
Before comparing footwear, break the trip into its main surfaces. Look at the amount of mud, loose rock, pavement, steep ground, and wet weather you’re likely to encounter. Also consider whether you’ll have reliable opportunities to dry your socks and footwear overnight.
A route with several different surfaces may require a compromise. You might choose a lighter shoe for most of the trip and accept less protection on a short rocky section, or choose more structure because the difficult terrain will come when your feet are already tired.
Mud and wet ground
Mud rewards traction, but there’s no tread pattern that makes every bog secure. Deep, soft mud can overwhelm shallow lugs, while very widely spaced lugs may shed mud better but feel awkward on firmer ground. The rubber compound matters, too: a hard outsole can be durable but less confidence-inspiring on wet roots and slick rock.
For consistently muddy routes, look for:
- A lug pattern with enough depth and spacing to release mud.
- A secure heel and midfoot fit, so your foot doesn’t slide inside the shoe.
- A stable platform that doesn’t twist easily under load.
- Materials that won’t stay waterlogged longer than necessary.
Waterproof footwear can keep external water out, but it isn’t a guarantee of dry feet. Water can enter over the cuff, through a submerged section, or from sweat inside the shoe. In warm, wet conditions, a non-waterproof shoe may drain and dry faster. In cold conditions, keeping water out can be more valuable.
Scree and loose rock
Scree is loose stone that shifts underfoot, often on slopes where every step requires small adjustments. Here, foothold and protection usually matter more than maximum flexibility. A shoe with a firm sole, a supportive upper, and a well-protected toe can reduce the strain caused by constantly moving ground.
Boots aren’t automatically safer on scree, though. A tall, stiff boot may provide useful ankle coverage and keep small stones out, but it can also feel cumbersome if you’re not accustomed to it. A low-cut hiking shoe with a firm sole may be enough for some hikers, particularly with a light pack and good balance.
Look for a close fit around the heel and midfoot. If your foot slides forward on a descent, your toes will repeatedly strike the front of the shoe. That problem is usually a fit or lacing issue, not something solved by simply buying a larger size.
Long road walks
Pavement and hard-packed roads create a different problem: repetitive impact. The surface is predictable, but it doesn’t absorb much force. A comfortable, moderately cushioned shoe can make a long road section easier, especially if the footwear bends naturally at the forefoot.
Road walking doesn’t always favour a soft shoe. Very plush cushioning can feel unstable with a heavy pack, and an overly flexible sole may leave your feet working harder than expected. Pay attention to how the shoe feels after an hour, not just during a quick shop fitting.
If a route includes many kilometres of pavement, check whether the outsole has enough rubber for the expected distance. Aggressive trail lugs can work on roads, but they may wear more quickly and feel less smooth than a less aggressive tread.
Check the route before choosing your soles
Review the current route description, recent trip reports, and official trail information for surface changes, closures, water conditions, and unusually long road sections. Conditions can change the balance between drainage, grip, cushioning, and protection.
Compare the three main footwear types
Trail runners
Trail runners are light, flexible, and often comfortable straight out of the box. They can be a good choice for maintained trails, fast-moving trips, warm conditions, or hikers who prefer a low-weight setup. Their flexible construction can also feel pleasant on long road sections.
The trade-offs are reduced durability, less protection from sharp rocks, and less resistance to twisting under a heavy load. Mesh uppers can let in water quickly, although they may dry faster afterwards. Many trail runners also have less room for thick socks or swelling feet than their appearance suggests.
Choose them when the route is relatively forgiving, your pack is light to moderate, and you’re comfortable with a more flexible platform.
Hiking shoes
Hiking shoes occupy the middle ground. They’re usually more structured than trail runners, with a firmer sole and more protection around the toe and sides. They can handle mixed terrain without feeling as heavy as many boots.
This is often the most versatile category for beginner backpackers, but “hiking shoe” covers a wide range. Some models are nearly as flexible as trail runners, while others are close to low-cut boots. Compare the actual fit, sole stiffness, heel hold, and weight rather than relying on the label.
They’re a sensible option for mixed routes involving moderate mud, some rocky ground, and occasional road walking. They may also suit hikers carrying a moderate pack who want additional structure without a tall cuff.
Hiking boots
Boots generally provide more structure, protection, and resistance to abrasion. A supportive boot can be useful with a heavier pack, rough off-trail travel, cold conditions, or terrain where your feet need protection from sharp rocks and repeated impacts.
The costs are weight, slower drying, and a longer break-in period for some models. A boot that feels secure in a shop can become hot and tiring after a full day. Stiffness isn't the same as comfort or stability, and more ankle material doesn’t eliminate the risk of rolling an ankle.
Choose boots because the route and load justify their structure—not because boots are the traditional backpacking choice.
Fit matters more than the category
A well-fitting shoe in the “wrong” category can cause fewer problems than a poorly fitting boot in the “right” one. Try footwear near the end of the day, when feet are often slightly larger. Wear the socks you plan to use, and leave enough space for your toes to spread without allowing your heel to lift excessively.
Walk down an incline if possible. Your toes shouldn’t hit the front. Lace the shoe firmly through the midfoot, then adjust the upper eyelets so the heel stays in place without creating painful pressure across the ankle.
Check for hot spots after walking for at least 15 or 20 minutes. A small irritation at home can become a blister after hours on the trail. Don’t assume footwear will stretch in every direction; pressure on the little toe or a narrow heel often remains a problem.
Match footwear to pack weight and conditions
A light shoe can be perfectly adequate for one person and uncomfortable for another carrying the same distance. Pack weight, body size, walking style, and previous injuries all affect the decision. As the load and terrain become more demanding, a firmer and more protective platform may feel better.
Weather changes the equation. In hot conditions, breathability and drying speed may matter more than waterproofing. In cold, wet, or snowy conditions, insulation, water resistance, and compatible socks become more important. For stream crossings, consider how easily the footwear drains and whether you can dry your feet during the day.
Test footwear before the trip
Wear new footwear on progressively longer walks. Start with ordinary daily use, then try local trails with the socks and pack you’ll use on the trip. Include stairs or a hill to reveal heel movement and toe pressure.
Don’t wait until the first morning of a multi-day trip to discover that your waterproof membrane makes your feet sweat or that your laces loosen on descents. Test your sock combination as well. Thick socks can improve comfort in a roomy shoe but make a close-fitting one too tight.
Carry a blister-management option even after a successful test. Feet can swell, weather can change, and a small change in gait can create a new pressure point.
A simple decision guide
Use this as a starting point rather than a rule:
- Mostly firm trails, light pack, and long road sections: consider trail runners or flexible hiking shoes.
- Mixed terrain with moderate mud and rocky sections: consider structured hiking shoes or lighter boots.
- Heavy pack, rough off-trail travel, cold conditions, or extensive sharp rock: consider more protective boots or very structured hiking shoes.
- Frequent wet ground: prioritize traction, fit, and drying strategy before deciding on waterproofing.
- Uncertain terrain: choose the lightest footwear that still gives you dependable fit, grip, and protection for the hardest section.
The best backpacking footwear is the pair that keeps your feet comfortable and controlled across the route’s most demanding surfaces. Start with mud, scree, and road mileage; then account for your pack, weather, and fit. Once you’ve tested that combination on local walks, your choice becomes a practical decision rather than a debate about which footwear type is universally superior.
