How Much Water Can You Safely Carry Between Reliable Sources?

A practical method for estimating water carries in the Desert Southwest, including drinking needs, cooking, heat, elevation, pace, source uncertainty, and the weight of extra water.

Water planning in the Desert Southwest is less about finding one perfect litres-per-day number and more about making a good estimate under changing conditions. A short distance on the map can take much longer than expected when the trail is exposed, sandy, steep, or slow to follow. A spring marked on a map may be seasonal, difficult to reach, or dry when you arrive.

The useful question isn’t simply, “How much water do I drink in a day?” It’s:

How much do I need to reach the next source I can reasonably count on, cook and clean, handle delays, and still have a margin if the day goes badly?

Here’s the planning method I use.

Start with the next dependable source

First, define the water carry by source rather than by mileage alone. Identify where you’ll fill up, then estimate the time between that point and the next source you’re willing to trust.

A dependable source usually has several of these qualities:

  • It has a recent report from the land manager, trail organisation, or reliable local source.
  • It’s available during the season you’re travelling.
  • It’s close to the route rather than requiring a long detour.
  • It has enough flow or storage for the number of hikers using it.
  • You have a treatment plan that works for the likely contamination risks.

A blue line on a map isn’t proof of any of those things. In desert country, a listed spring, tank, or creek can be absent, fenced off, contaminated, or reserved for wildlife and livestock. I treat an uncertain source as a bonus, not as the foundation of my water plan.

Confirm the next fill before you commit: Check the most recent source report, land-manager alert, fire restriction, closure notice, and access information for your route. Confirm whether the source is currently flowing and whether collection or treatment is permitted. If the report is old or contradictory, plan to carry from the last dependable source.

Estimate your drinking requirement

For an initial estimate, many backpackers might use roughly 0.5 to 1 litre per hour while hiking, but that range is only a starting point. Your actual requirement can be substantially higher in hot, exposed, dry conditions, particularly if you’re climbing or walking on loose ground.

A better calculation is:

Estimated hiking water = expected travel time × your hourly drinking rate

Use time, not distance. A 16-kilometre day on a smooth trail may take less water and less time than a 10-kilometre route through sand, rocky washes, or steep switchbacks.

If you don’t know your own rate, use a conservative estimate from a similar trip, then record what you actually drank. Weighing your water before and after a hike can help, as long as you account for cooking, spills, and water left in bottles. A single trip won’t produce a perfect answer, but several trips in comparable conditions will show a useful pattern.

I’d also separate thirst from panic. Drinking steadily is generally more useful than waiting until you’re desperate, but forcing large amounts of water without regard to thirst can also be dangerous. Water needs vary with body size, exertion, temperature, clothing, diet, and acclimatisation. If you’re unsure how to manage hydration in extreme heat or have a medical condition affecting fluid balance, get advice from a qualified health professional before the trip.

Add water for camp and cooking

Your hiking estimate covers only the hours you’re moving. Add what you’ll use after reaching camp and before leaving the next morning.

Count water for:

  • Rehydrating meals and making hot drinks.
  • Breakfast and any food preparation.
  • Brushing your teeth, if you don’t want to use treated drinking water for it.
  • Washing hands before meals.
  • Cleaning cookware, if your food system requires it.
  • A small amount for unexpected spills or food that needs more water than planned.

The cooking amount is easy to underestimate because meal packaging often lists the minimum water needed. If you prefer a less soupy meal, need extra water for a hot drink, or are cooking for two, the difference adds up over several days.

You can reduce camp use by choosing meals that require little or no cooking, wiping cookware instead of washing it, and carrying a small amount of dedicated hygiene water. Don’t reduce it so aggressively that you skip basic hand hygiene after using the toilet or before handling food.

Account for heat, elevation, and pace

Heat is the obvious factor in the Desert Southwest, but it isn’t the only one. Elevation can increase exertion, while a heavy pack, poor sleep, unfamiliar terrain, and a late start can all slow you down. A slower pace usually means more time exposed to dry air and sun.

Build your estimate around the conditions you might actually encounter:

Heat and exposure

An exposed route with little shade can make a moderate distance feel like a much longer day. Plan for the hottest part of the route, not just the temperature at the trailhead. Walking early, resting in shade, and covering your skin can reduce water loss and may be more effective than simply adding an unlimited amount of water.

Elevation and climbing

Climbing increases effort even when the weather is mild. If a route includes substantial elevation gain, add time and use a higher drinking estimate for that section. Descending isn’t automatically easy either; rough terrain can slow you down and extend the day.

Pace and route uncertainty

Give yourself a realistic moving speed, then add time for breaks, navigation, photos, pack adjustments, and difficult footing. If the route is remote or poorly marked, include a delay reserve. Running out of water because you planned for your fastest possible pace is a common and avoidable mistake.

Add a reserve for uncertainty

After estimating drinking and camp water, add a reserve. The reserve should cover a late arrival, a wrong turn, a minor injury, a source that takes longer to reach, or a short-term closure or detour.

There’s no single reserve that suits every route. For a well-known trail between confirmed sources, a smaller margin may be reasonable. For a remote cross-country section, a questionable spring, extreme heat, or limited bailout options, the reserve should be much larger—and the route may not be suitable if you can’t carry it.

I like to express the calculation this way:

Total carry = drinking water + camp water + reserve

For example, if you expect six hours of travel and plan around 0.75 litres per hour, that’s 4.5 litres for hiking. Add 1 litre for cooking and camp use, then add the reserve your route demands. The result might be a six-litre carry, or more if the source is uncertain and the weather is severe.

That example is a planning exercise, not a recommendation for a particular trail. Your own measured rate and the actual conditions matter more than the arithmetic.

Convert litres into pack weight

Water is heavy: one litre weighs approximately one kilogram, before counting the bottle or reservoir. A four-litre carry is therefore roughly four kilograms of water; a seven-litre carry is roughly seven kilograms.

That weight changes how you walk. It can slow your pace, increase effort on climbs, and raise your food and water needs. Don’t calculate water in isolation from the pack weight it creates.

Before committing to a long dry section, load your pack with the proposed water amount and walk on comparable terrain. Check that your bottles fit securely, your pack remains comfortable, and you can still access water without unpacking everything. Carrying a little extra capacity is usually wiser than carrying only the exact amount your first estimate requires.

Capacity and quantity aren’t the same thing. A six-litre capacity lets you carry six litres, but you don’t have to fill it every time. Multiple containers also provide redundancy if one leaks or becomes contaminated.

Plan for the source, not just the water

At a reliable source, allow time to find the actual collection point, filter or treat the water, and let equipment cool if it has been sitting in the sun. Don’t assume a source beside a road is automatically safe, or that clear water is free of pathogens.

Use treatment appropriate to the source and follow the product’s directions, including contact time and filtration limits. Keep untreated water away from clean bottles, hoses, and cooking equipment. If the source is shared with livestock, avoid disturbing animals and collect water in a way that limits sediment.

Carry enough to reach the source safely; don’t plan to “drink down” your last bottle just before arriving. A wrong turn, a blocked approach, or a longer-than-expected climb can turn a comfortable margin into an emergency quickly.

Make the decision before the trailhead

For each dry section, write down:

  1. The last confirmed source and the next confirmed source.
  2. The expected travel time under realistic conditions.
  3. Your measured drinking rate in similar weather.
  4. Camp and cooking water.
  5. A delay and source-failure reserve.
  6. The total litres, total water weight, and available container capacity.
  7. The point at which you’ll turn around or change plans.

If the required carry is beyond what you can safely manage, change the itinerary rather than hoping to become more efficient on the trail. Start earlier, shorten the section, cache water only where it’s legal and permitted, arrange a refill, or choose a route with more dependable sources.

The right answer isn’t the smallest amount you can carry. It’s the amount that lets you reach the next trustworthy source with enough margin to deal with heat, slow ground, imperfect navigation, and ordinary bad luck. Plan from observed personal use, verify the sources close to departure, and treat every extra litre as both insurance and pack weight.
